Dear Parents,
One of the California Math standards for first graders is: “Know the addition facts (sums to 20) and the corresponding subtraction facts and commit them to memory”. To that end, we will begin timed math tests on Tuesday, Jan. 24th. The test that day will be a “pre-test” to see how well each child knows his/her addition and subtraction facts up to 6. The pre-test will have 40 problems and the students will have five minutes to complete the test. The tests will be scored and sent home so that you will know which addition and subtraction facts your child needs to memorize, working with you at home, in order to successfully pass the final test on facts up to 6. Students will need to successfully answer 32 out of the 40 problems in five minutes in order to pass the test on 0-6 facts (see below) and then move on to addition/subtraction facts up to 12. To be at standard for this trimester, students need to master memorization of addition/subtraction facts up to 12 by March 1st. The schedule for the math facts tests for this trimester will be:
Tuesday, Jan. 24 - pre-test on facts 0-6
Thursday, Feb. 2 - test on facts 0-6
Thursday, Feb. 9 - “second-chance” test on facts 0-6

We strongly recommend working with your child using homemade flash cards, math apps, and/or math computer games to help your child memorize their addition and subtraction facts. (There are links to math games and computer flash cards on our websites.) All of us probably remember working on memorizing our “times tables” for multiplication. It is just as important for our children to have a strong grasp and instant recall of addition and subtraction facts. Thanks for your support!
