Autobiography Project

5th Grade Autobiography

Due Monday, April 16th

Assignment: Create a Personal Autobiography.

Assignment Objectives: To complete a well-written chapter each week. At the beginning of each week, students will be given a chapter to complete and turn in by the beginning of the following week (this means they have the weekend to work on it).  Most writing will be done in class, however, some students may want to type it at home and add photos, illustrations, documents, etc.) The finished product will be put together in class.

Timeline: Beginning in January – middle of April.

Grading: Will be based on presentation of the book, writing, timeliness of assignment and creativity.

General Requirements: Minimum 1 page for each chapter with normal size font; single-spaced. (I highly encourage typing double-spaced during your "rough draft" phase!)  Photos/hand-drawn illustrations are optional, but encouraged.

For some of you “go-getters,” you will have the option of creating four additional chapters.

Throughout this project, we will read different books that will model creative, descriptive writing.

Listed below are the chapter topics for your book. Each chapter must be typed – at least one page, no bigger than 14 font, and single spaced.

We will have some opportunities to work on this in class but you may have to write some from home, as well.  Be sure you have a way to save your work if you are working from multiple computers.  (flash drive, google docs, etc.)

Please be sure to use the editing process.  It’s a good idea for someone else to read your work and to use spell check!  Also, be sure you have a folder to collect your chapters before you bind it in a creative way (your choice!) that will help you treasure it for a lifetime.

Please be careful with it and do your best work.

Grading will be based on presentation of book, writing, timeliness of assignments and creativity.

Table of Contents - List all chapter titles and page numbers  (will need to be done after writing so you will know topic ideas)

Dedication - Write a dedication to someone who has had an impact on your life.

Include your name, address, age, physical description, things you like/dislike about yourself. Name each member of your family and tell something about each one of them.

Chapter 2  - Happy Birthday!

Give the date and tell about what this date means to you. Tell about your best birthday so far.

Chapter 3 - My Favorite Things.

Tell about things that make you happy, excited etc. (songs, quotes, friends, food, sport, hobby, movie, restaurant, etc.  You can even do a poster for this place.  Try out “Glogster.”)

Chapter 4 - A Great Place.

Name or describe a place that is special to you.  Tell about why it is such a great place and share an experience you had there.

Chapter 5 -Happy Holiday.

Chapter 10 –Saying Goodbye to Greenbrook.

Any last thoughts for those who will be in fifth grade next year?  What should they know? Lessons learned?  Fun and sad times.  Teachers, recess, lunch, special moments and places.

Some of you may want to add an additional four to six chapters.  Here are some other ideas about what you could write about:

•Heart breakers.

Tell abut things that make you sad/ get you down/ a terrible experience etc.

•Way Back When.

Tell something about when you were young.  Ask your parents for some ideas.

• Your Greatest Fan

Write a letter to your favorite athlete, movie/TV star, rock star, author, a person in government etc.  Ask questions or comment on something in their lives or achievements that interest you

• My Pet/ Treasure.

Write a poem or short essay about your pet, stuffed animal or special treasure.

•The Best Book I Ever Read.

Name the book and tell why you think it was the best book.

Other ideas? Community Service, Making Changes, Moving, Words to live by, an original poem, etc.
