VALENTINE’S DAY!
Valentine’s Day, February 14th, is fast approaching. Although we will not be having a class party (as we can only have 3 per year), we will be exchanging valentines in class and sharing in some Valentine’s Day fun! The students will be decorating bags in class to hold all of the valentines. If your child would like to participate in our valentine exchange, they may bring their valentines to school on Monday, February 13th or Tuesday, February 14th, but no earlier. Dear Parents,
Next week (week of January 30th) all 2nd grade classes will begin our differentiated spelling program. Based on a variety of spelling assessments, your child has been placed in a developmentally appropriate spelling group. These groups are designed to help the student learn and master different spelling patterns. For example, a student may have missed a lot of words with long vowel patterns on his/her assessment. This child would then be placed in a spelling group that focuses on long vowel patterns within words. Once they master this skill, then they will move on to another spelling pattern they need to work on.
Each 2nd grade teacher will be teaching a specific spelling pattern. The students will rotate to their specific spelling group on Mondays from 8:35 am – 9:00 am. Here they will receive their spelling list for the week and learn about the spelling pattern for the week. Then on Fridays, from 8:35 am – 8:50 am, they will rotate to their spelling group again to take their weekly spelling test.
The students will be re-evaluated every 6 weeks. If they have mastered the spelling pattern, then they move on to another pattern. If they still are having trouble, then they will continue with the same spelling pattern.
In the past, the students have really enjoyed this program and have loved rotating around to the different 2nd grade classrooms. We are very excited to be starting this program again this year.
Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns

SECOND GRADE
SPEECHES
Dear Parents,
We will be starting our oral language program the week of January 31st. For five weeks, the students will be assigned a specific weekly speech topic and a certain day of the week that they will present their speeches. Each presentation should only be a few minutes long.
Our objective is to give each child experience speaking before a group of their peers, as well as, developing appropriate listening skills expected of a good audience. We will be working toward presenting speeches that show organization, good eye contact, clear voice, acceptable grammar, and good posture. Your child has been assigned a “speech day”. Your child should be prepared to give his/her speech every week on this assigned day. Your child’s assigned speech day is listed below. Their speech day will also be listed on our website under the tab “Speech Schedule”.
TUESDAY: Drew, Elijah, Jeiane, McKenna, Emily, Dylan, Gavin
WEDNESDAY: Ben, Karlee, Noah, Abby, Brianna, AJ, Kylie R.
THURSDAY: Neda, Jeffrey, Tyler, Cameron M., Katelyn, Nathan
FRIDAY: Evan, Kylee C., Cameron H., Joseph, Ember, Calvin
