During this
last trimester of First Grade, we will continue our math timed tests to assess
each student’s ability to meet the CA First Grade math standard of: “Know
the addition facts (sums to 20) and the corresponding subtraction facts and
commit them to memory”. Students who have successfully now passed the
test on facts 0-12 will next test on facts 0-16. We will begin with a
pre-test with 40 problems and the students will have five minutes to complete
the test. The tests will be scored and sent home so that you will know
which addition and subtraction facts your child needs to memorize, working with
you at home, in order to successfully pass the final test on facts up to 16.
Students will need to successfully answer 32 out of the 40 problems in five
minutes in order to pass the test and then move on to addition/subtraction
facts up to 20. To be at
standard for this last trimester, students need to master memorization of
addition/subtraction facts up to 20 by May 31st.
The schedule

Memorizing addition and subtraction facts is just as important as memorizing
multiplication facts will be in a couple of years. Math curriculum for
your child next year in Second Grade is based upon the premise that students
can quickly recall facts to 20. We strongly recommend working with your
child using homemade flash cards, math apps, and/or math computer games to help
your child memorize their facts. (There are links to math games and
computer flash cards on our websites.)
