Message from the Principal

Principal Photo
Hello and welcome to Harbour View Elementary School. My name is Cindy Osterhout, the principal, and on behalf of our staff, it is a pleasure to greet you as partners in your child's educational experience. Harbour View is fortunate to have highly qualified professional and dedicated staff members who are truly committed to providing your child with the best education in a caring environment.

Harbour View is dedicated to meeting all learning needs for students. We offer our students a full academic program that encompasses Preppie Kindergarten through Fifth grade. In addition, we have full-time professional educators who teach and enhance learning in general music, physical education, and a wonderful library technichian who supervises and implements our morning “Homework Club” daily 8:00 – 8:25 a.m.

Parent support is vital to the growth of your children academically and otherwise. I strongly encourage you to help in any way whether through volunteering in the classroom to participating regularly in the PTA. Any contribution you can make is valuable and appreciated.

Feel free to contact me any time if you have questions or are looking for opportunities to assist in your child's education.
Cindy Osterhout

ANNOUNCEMENTS

H1N1 Information

Information was obtained from cdc.gov and flu.gov – log onto either website for continual updated information.
What is the incubation period of the H1N1 (swine) flu? How long will it take to get the flu after being exposed?
The estimated incubation period is unknown and could range from 1 to 7 days, and more likely 1 to 4 days.
Persons with novel H1N1 flu virus infection should be considered potentially contagious (able to spread disease) for up to 7 days after illness onset. Persons who continue to be ill longer than 7 days should be considered potentially contagious until symptoms have resolved. Children, especially younger children, might be contagious for longer periods. People with influenza-like illness should stay home for at least 24 hours after their fever is gone (without the use of fever-reducing medicine). A fever is defined as having a temperature of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater.
It's important to remember that we are still in flu and allergy season and it's not uncommon to have cold or flu-like symptoms. If you are sick, stay home from work or school to monitor your health. If you do have symptoms where you think you need urgent care, contact your doctor right away.

GATE Program Expands!

Ocean View School District will pilot a third grade Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program for the 2010-2011 school year. As part of the screening process to identify students for possible GATE participation, all second grade students will be assessed during the period of March 22-31, 2010. This test will only be administered with parent permission; written consent must be on file at the school in order for students to be assessed.

If you have any questions about GATE testing at Harbour View, please contact the office. Additional information regarding the Ocean View GATE program is available on the District website.
