            OUTSIDE READING PROGRAM 2011-2012

INCLUDES:
... I. MONTHLY READING LOGS...
due the first of each month for the prior month's reading
...**II. TWEENTRIBUNE SUMMARY BLOGS... two due Saturday of each week
... III. TRIPLE ENTRY RESPONSE LOGS... two per trimester due as outlined
at the bottom of this page

READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ!

To help you become better readers (and consequently, better writers), you will
be doing independent reading outside of class. You will be reporting (and
recording) your reading on the following forms:  (I) A Monthly Reading Log;
and (III) Two Triple Entry Response Logs per trimester.

The Triple Entry Response Log is basically a structured book report. You will
do two of these per trimester. Ask Questions if this is not crystal clear.

**(II) You will also be reading news articles on a website called TweenTribune.
These are short news articles that should be of interest to you because they
are chosen specifically for your age group. You will read these short
articles and practice your summary writing skills by summarizing them in a
blog consisting of five or six sentences. You will also include a two
sentence opinion about the topic or content of the article. See instructions
below or download a printout of the instructions from the "Documents" page of
this website.

*******READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ!***********

I.	MONTHLY READING LOG ..... READ! READ! READ!
On this form, you will record any material you read OUTSIDE of class. This
can include magazines, newspapers, Internet articles, assigned reading for any
class as homework, etc. You will record the date, the type of material you
read and the number of pages you read. We will be keeping track of these
pages at the end of each month with a goal of reading 10,000 pages in the
school year. As an incentive in addition to the obvious benefit of becoming a
prolific and accomplished reader, you will receive a Homework Pass for every
2,500 pages you read. Important to note is that this Monthly Reading Log is
due (signed by your parent) on the first school day of each month for the
prior month’s reading. This form is available in the back of the room as well
as on this website in the "Documents" page. I will not accept any Reading Log
without a parent signature.

READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ!

II. TWEENTRIBUNE
Every week you will be required to read two articles from the following
website: tweentribune.com ~ you will choose articles, READ THEM and then post
a "blog" on the article. Your comment must include a summary of five or six
sentences and an opinion of the article in two sentences.

READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ!

TRIPLE ENTRY RESPONSE (TER) LOG INSTRUCTIONS:

READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ! READ!

Below are explicit instructions for each section of the Triple Entry Response
form.

I. “Important Quotes from the text” (worth 5 points)
In this section, you will write meaningful passages from the text. Your
selections should reflect something important about the book, or
passages that revealed an important conflict or crisis point in the book. Copy
at least three of these selections into the upper left box of the form. Be
sure to include the page number where you found the excerpt.

Ia. “Your responses to your selections from the text” (worth 5 points)
In this upper right-hand box, you will respond to what you have just written
in the upper left hand box – those passages that reflected something important
about the book. Your responses should include the reason why you chose that
selection and how it was meaningful and an important part of the book.
Include the page number of the excerpt so it is clear which passage you are
responding to.

II. “Graphic Image” (worth 10 points)
In this box, you will present a graphic image - draw a picture, cut out
magazine photos or download graphic images that in some way reflects back upon
the book. This should show some effort. Downloaded graphics should relate to
the book. If downloaded, there should be several images and should
definitely not just be a copy of the book jacket. Think about how you would
explain the image or images and its importance or significance to the text.
The score for this section is based upon my perception of your effort.

III. TER Literary Elements (worth 10 points)
On the back of the form you will fill out the required information, including:
Narrative Structure, Major and Minor Characters, and the plot structure
indicating rising action, conflict, climax, and resolution. BE SPECIFIC AND
PROVIDE DETAIL. Please write neatly, or type.
