Mrs. Danin-Kreiselman, Biology |
BioBulletin SPRING 2012COMPUTER LAB: CAREER PROJECT The purpose of the computer lab today is to make advances in all aspects of your project, both the biology background as well as the career itself. BIOLOGY BACKGORUND: Find the matrix that mathces biology topics under "Careers in Biology" http://teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/sd3l3.aspx. Click on "Career Matrix". - As explained in the yell handout - first list the buleted biology topics, then chose one per student to connect to the career. - NEXT: Each student studies one of these biological topics, to fill about a page of text and figures to be on the poster. I recommend NOT to proceed with this part in the computer lab, which ios more valuable for hte career research.
CAREER RESEARCH: Two main resources will give you all that you need. (And if this is not enough, you can always google...): 1. Career cruising, which is availale only on campus. 2. Bureau of Labor Statistics (links is under "Biology careers").
1. Go to www.lausd.net; Search for "Digital Library", select "Career Cruiser". There are various to work in this website. I recommend to start with looking up the "Search by Index" and simply find your career on the list. If this does not bring anythign close, you can search by school subject, explore industried (looking for similar jons you might consider). - You can also use this career cruiser to see what fits you personally for a future career. Thsi option is under "Career Selector". This latter part is not mandatory for our project.
2. Go to http://www.bls.gov and use the career you are interested in as key word for the search.
You will need to find the following information about your career: A. Job Description B. Working Conditions C. Earnings - beginners and veterans D. Education needed E. Career Path (Prompotion prospects),
ANy questions? You may email me to mxd0543@lausd.net.
GOOD LUCK!
04.29.12 project UPDATES: CAREER (periods 1,4,6): 1) If you haven't chosen a career to explore, choose ASAP. You can find the matrix that is in the posters in class, by clicking on "career matrix" in the "Careers in Biology" page. The icon for that is at the very bottom of the home page.
2) Once you have chosen a career, your next step is to pick on at least three sections in the biology book that are necessary for this career, and summarize them in bulleted facts. Each group member needs to turn in at least TEN project facts that are meaningful. This is due Wednesday, May 2nd. A student that does not turn in the 10 biological facts cannot get any credit in this project.
RESEARCH PROPOSAL (Periods 2,5): Please follow the instructions on the wikispaces. But in short - you are suppose to turn in a research question in the form of "What would be the effect of _____ on _____" . Due: Past due!
Next: Look for an article that is in your field of choice, and that you would be able to analyze according to our science news assignment (the one from the Fall semester).
04.02.12 FIELD TRIP PHOTOS can be found in http://www.jfkcougars.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=15489&type=u (Copy address into the url window at the top of your browser)
which is the same as going to the jfkcougars.org website, chosing Staff, clicking on Kreisleman, M. and clicking on "Albums" to your right.
Please email me (mxd0543@lausd.net) if there are technical problems with the photos. It is the first time I used the school website for field trip albums.
03.23.12 Attention Recent Homework: Assignment sheet for Evolution: http://www.teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/ap12.aspx 1. Genetic Variation and Genetic Drift - Go to March 12th. 2. Speciation - Go to March 15 3. Evidence for Evolution - Go to March 19 4. Ecology Introductions - Go to March 20
Make-up Homework: Assignment sheet for genetics: http://teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/ap11.aspx Assignment sheet for Evolution: http://www.teacherweb.com/CA/Kennedy/Kreiselman/ap12.aspx Study Guides: Down load from Biology files 2010-Present ABO Blood type Punnet Square - A handout in class. I will try to remember to upload it.
Field trip Journal: To be completed before Spring break (if went on March 16) or right after Spring Break (other field trips). EXTRA 20 points will be given to well-written journals if turned in before Wednesday 03.28.12. Did not go on any of the field trips? Answer the same questions as on the field trip journal, but about a place nearby your house. The assignment will be totaled then as 150 instead of 200 points. Went on March 22 (Fire ecology)? Find the picture of the results when I upload the pictures, later. 03.26.12: You can DOWNLOAD the field trip journal from Biology Files 2010-Present
02.24.12 Announcement: GOOGLE SCIENCE FAIR... Interested? Need Help? Tell me!
02.05.12 5-WEEK GRADES: 1) Current grades are current, as posted. this includes all the corrections as well as most recent assignments, notebooks, Quiz improvements etc. If there are still errors tell me tomorrow, but I can't promise to change your grade for lack of time to do so.
2) The Grades are accurate, HOWEVER, since the 5-week % is not reliable, having had only one quiz, many students with very high grades will not see that B/A on their report card, but instead will see a "slash / " sign. If you are one of those students, and you maintain such a high grade, good for you! The next report card will reflect the grade you will have precisely.
3) If you are in the HONORS BIOLOGY students, and by the end of the day (Sunday 02.05.12) you have not posted even one response on the wikispaces, your report card grade will be one whole letter grade lower than what you see here. If there is no way for you to participate in the wikispaces discussion, please let the counselor know that you are no longer in the honors biology program. In that case, your letter grade will return to normal, just without the 'Honors' designation.
If you need further clarification, please email me to mxd0543@lausd.net, or talk to me during lunch. BUT please do NOT ask me about this during our valuable class time!
02.03.12 Punnet Square exercise (handout from the class) can be found under "Biology Files 2010-Present". The file is called "GENETICS: One-Trait problems".. The Extra credit additional exercises can be found in http://home.comcast.net/~clupold96/genetics_problems_table_of_contents.htm Click on "Single Trait crosses". (The other handouts are also very good)
02.01.12 Homework given today (copied from the assignment sheet for genetics):
01.15.12 Please note that: 1) Homework, about chromosomes - is due TOMORROW (Tuesday 01.16.12) 2) HONORS BIOLOGY - Wikispaces: Most of you have note yet answered the three questions about Tarantula Cannibalism. WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR??! ASAP- Go to wikispaces.com, Log in with your UserID (such as Per7JohnK) and Password (date of birth mmddyy). - Click on kreiselmanhonorsbiology.wikispaces.com, and continue from there. For any technical or other problem - email me mxd0543@lausd.net.
01.08.12 HONORS Biology - Aside from the normal flow of learning in class anmd at home, you need to becoem a member of the kreiselmanhonorsbiology wikispace.
To do so, go to www.kreiselmanhonorsbiology.wikispaces.com, click on "Join Now". Sign in with your email address. Soon after you will get an invitation from me to become a member of the wikispace. Please email me directly to mxd0543@lausd.net in case there is a problem.
