Fourth Grade News

2-22-12
Next week we'll be taking the Relationships of Living Things (Ecosystems) Quiz. This is an essay quiz. We will outline the essay in class. Students will not be permitted to use their outline when they take the quiz, but they can use it to study from beforehand.
The Essay question is this:
John Muir said, "If you try to pick one thing out, you find it's hitched to everything else in the Universe." Explain what he meant by that. Use as many of the vocabulary words we learned as you can in your essay.

There is a powerpoint on my website with all of the vocabulary words. We have been learning about these concepts for about a month and a half. Students should be VERY familiar with most of them.
  Quiz dates:
             Olmstead: Tue. Feb. 28
              Maethiesn: Thurs. March 1
              Smith: Friday: March 2

12-6-11

Thurs. Dec. 15: Ms. Mathiesen's class
Friday, Dec. 16: Ms. Olmstead and Ms. Smith's class

10-10-11 Fourth graders will be having a quiz on Scientific Measurement at the end of this week. There is a slide show in the Fourth Grade Quizzes section of this site that you can use to study with. The quiz dates are:Thurs. Oct. 13 Matheisen and Olmstead
Friday Oct. 14 Smith
We'll make a study guide in class tomorrow.

9-16-11 Boy did we have fun! I asked the kids to write directions for how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Then they read them to me and I did EXACTLY what they said..what a mess!!! They forgot to tell me where to put the pb&j, to use a knife, and HOW MUCH to use. It  was quite comical, especially when I was spreading the peanut butter... what? You didn't say WHERE? ok, how about on my ARM?! But the point was well made. When we write an experimental plan, it must be

specific, precise, tell how much and be repeatable. Don't forget that when you're writing your experimental plans for the plant project and the science fair!

9-8-11  This week we have been learning how to develp good questioning skills. We learned about a silly man who wanted to fly. Ask your child what "Have gun, will travel" means! Next week we'll learn about Leonardo Da Vinci who used careful observations of science and nature to help him make beautiful art. We'll also learn how to write a good experimental plan.

8-30-11  This week we are beginning our study of the Scientific Method. We will start by doing some observations. We'll learn about a few scientists who practiced careful observations and then we'll learn how to develope questions and form useful hypothesis. Don't forget to turn in your signed guidelines slip by Sept. 2

Welcome. I hope you had a great time in your first day of science class. Don't forget to tell your folks all about the fun we had. Be sure to check back here often for updates. And tell your parents to check it out too. For now, I suggest you explore some of my links and Youtube videos. They are a lot of fun!
