We are proud to continue to be a NASA Explorer school!
Family Rocket & Engineering Night
Our annual Family Rocket Night will be held this year on June 6th. This year
we are very excited to announce the addition of some Engineering activities
that students and parents can do in our multipurpose room while rockets are
launched. Students can build and launch their very own rocket. They learn
about rocketry and prizes are given for longest flight, highest flight, and
best decorated rocket. Bring the whole family to this event that students
look forward to every year!
Annual Star Party
Each year we host a Star Party where families and community members as well as
students can come out and experience astronomy at its best! We always have
the privilege of the Orange County Astronomy Society to come and share their
very high-powered microscopes with us. This year we got
to see Jupiter very clearly, what a treat! Lastly, they get to experience
some of the current projects and missions that NASA is working on by exploring
some websites on computers with interactive simulations. This is a tradition
we hope to carry on every year! Please click the link to
the left to look at fabulous pictures of this event.
Robotics Update
Our 4th and 5th students trained have trained hard all year long. This year
we are extremely proud to announce the first annual competition between Lake
View and one of our middle schools, Vista View. The competition will be held
on May 31st. Each team has only 2 minutes to see how many "planet-like"
tasks their robot can complete such as rescuing a stranded moon buggy, placing
a methane sensor into a volatile crater, and deploying astronaut habitats from
a vehicle's base.
Previous NASA News
Former principal Colette Wright along with teachers Geoff Hammond and Sandi
Lewis traveled to Houston, TX in April to participate in a very exciting
opportunity! They experienced what real astronauts do by flying in a plane
that creates the feeling of weightlessness or reduced gravity. A
proposal was submitted in the fall to have students at Lake View design and
conduct an experiment that would be flown in reduced gravity. It was accepted
and students planned and implemented the project all year. In Houston, Mrs.
Wright, Mrs. Lewis, and Mr. Hammond all got to fly aboard a plane called
NASA's Weightless Wonder and conduct the exact experiment and record
the results. Students then compiled a final report based on the findings in
gravity and reduced gravity in May and June. What an opportunity for Lake
View to experience!
