PE Dept. Handout

The physical education program addresses the student’s fundamental need for
regular physical activity to remain healthy. Our program is directed toward
developing students as physically educated persons who: (1) have mastered
the
necessary skills to participate confidently in many different forms of
physical activities, (2) have an understanding of the rules, strategies and
etiquette of various games, (3) value physical fitness and personal hygiene,
(4) develop an understanding of the need for appropriate nutrition and
exercise, and (5) promote attitudes and behaviors that reduce health risks.

We hold high expectations for student performance at Lee Middle School. In
order for students to participate safely and effectively during class
activities, they need to be dressed in appropriate clothing. Proper attire
at Lee is the Lee logo shorts, Lee logo T-shirt, and tennis shoes that
are laced and tied properly. When the weather turns cold, students may wear
sweat pants and/or sweat shirts. Sweats may be the following colors: blue,
grey or white. (Reminder: Sweat pants that zip or button from the ankle to
the waist are not allowed due to safety concerns.) A Physical Education
staff member will print your son or daughter’s last name and first initial
on
each article of clothing. The Lee shirt and shorts are available through
the
Physical Education Department. The cost for both items is $25, the shirt is
$15 and the shorts are also $10. Loaner clothes will be available should
your child “forget” their clothing. The student will need to check with
their teacher to obtain loaner clothes.

Students will be expected to dress daily and may be excused from class
activities on an as needed basis only. Please write a note explaining the
type of activity your son/daughter should be excused from and the dates to
be
excused, as well as a number where you can be reached during the day.
(Under
the Education Code, a student may only be excused from an activity for three
consecutive days, after which a written excuse from a doctor is required.)
Each student will be issued their own combination lock and gym locker to
lock
up their clothing. They are encouraged to keep their combination to
themselves, and their locker locked at all times. Students will be charged
for the replacement of lost locks ($8.00). No jewelry may be worn during
P.E. class, students must lock jewelry in their lockers. A plastic
container
with a lid is recommended to hold jewelry.

When your son/daughter has “forgotten” their P.E. clothes, the P.E.
Department will provide a clean uniform for them to wear for tone class
period. During a six week period, we will allow clothes to be borrowed two
times without a penalty. On the third day and any day after that, the
student will receive detention from their teacher. Should your son/daughter
refuse the loaner clothes, the following consequences will result:
1st time - Parent contact and 2 hours of Saturday School.
2nd time - Parent contact and 4 hours of Saturday School.
3rd time - Student will be sent to the Vice Principal and suspended.

In an attempt to promote personal hygiene and in keeping with the
California
Administration Code, Title V, Section 802 in regard to student hygiene, if
your child chooses to shower after physical education class, a towel will be
provided for your son/daughter’s use. We also recommend he/she use a stick
or roll-on deodorant. Please remember that no spray cans or glass
containers
are allowed in the locker room.

Grading: Progress reports are issued every six weeks.
Your son/ daughter’s grade will be based on their performance in the
following areas:

given to students who demonstrate exemplary fitness and movement skills on
the President’s Council on Physical Fitness Test Battery, as well as on the
State of California’s Fitnessgram Test Battery and our own Wildcat Fitness
Award events.
