What type of writing activities can I have my child do at home?

1) Encourage your child to keep a journal. They can use a plain notebook and
decorate it, but may enjoy writing in a nicer journal. You can give him/her
journal topics or have him/her do a “free write” where they choose what to
write about. After, have them read her entry to someone at home (parent,
grandparent, older sibling, etc.).

2) Each time your child finishes reading a book, ask him/her to write a short
summary. Writing summaries at home is a great way for students to practice
basic writing skills while also working on reading comprehension. Or, he/she
could write a response, such as: writing about the characters, predictions she
has, connections to characters or events, opinions of the characters or
events, etc.

3) In order to prepare for standardized writing tests, you can have your child
respond to writing prompts. I can provide you with some ideas or simply
Google “3rd grade writing prompts” online.
