June 8th-12th
Room 27 Reminders and School-Wide Announcements
I can hardly believe the year is coming to a close. We have experienced many milestones and events together. This year, I have watched and observed your wonderful children, my students, develop socially and academically. It has been a pleasure to have them in my class. Thank you for all of your help and support in and out of the classroom. I look forward to another year together.
The third grade did an amazing job on their biography projects. They are very excited to present their projects to you. Thank you for coming today.
End of the Year Pool Party
Cost: $4.00 per person. Siblings and chaperones are welcome as long as they pay the admission fee. Please make checks payable to: LVCS PTO. Your total payment must include all attending the pool. Please return by 6/2.
What to bring: bathing suit (girls must wear either a one piece bathing suit, two piece bathing suits must be wore with a t-shirt or swim shirt cover up), flip flops towel, sunscreen, change of clothes, and a snack to eat at the pool. Please, no pool toys.
We will be leaving at 9:15 and returning by lunch (12:30pm).
Report cards
Report cards will be sent home with your child on June 12th.
Camp Arroyo and Fund raising
A camp waiver went home yesterday. I attached an additional copy for those of you who did not receive one. This is optional, but very much appreciated.
August 15th is the Livermore "Salsa Festival." Our third graders have another opportunity to make additional money toward the third grade camp fund. If you are interested in working at our booth, please let me know before June 12th so that I can pass your information on to our parent coordinating the event.
Our class pet, Buttons, will be spending summer with the Emme Poe, Jayden Mosby, and Danica Rizzo. The Rizzo family will share Buttons with other families over the summer as well. Please let me know by the 8th if you are interested.
If you have old newspapers, please send them to school. We need them to line Button's cage :)
*The following are appropriate to feed Buttons and are high in vitamin C:
kiwi, tomatoes (cherry), orange slices, kale, spinach (fresh leaves), broccoli, dark leafy greens, red and green bell pepper.
*Please do not feed him dried fruit or cereal. If you would like to donate these items throughout the week, please send them in a small zip lock sandwich size bag, and I will place them in the fridge. Also, we are in need of "Carefresh Bedding" found at the pet store. It is used to keep his cage clean :)
- Nightly reading is very important to help your child with reading fluency and comprehension. Please have your child read aloud to you for at least 15 minutes 3-5 times per week. To help your child with reading comprehension, please use the "Book Talk" questions I sent home. These questions are appropriate for any book and assist students with reading for meaning. As you listen to your child read, stop at the end of each paragraph and ask them 1-2 questions from the list. Lastly, AR quizzes are also a good way to test if your child understood the book they read. Most of the books in our classroom and school library have an AR test. To take AR tests, please visit the following web site: https://hosted27.renlearn.com/2002933/default.htm
- Timed multiplication tests are every Monday and Friday. Students will be given 100 problems to complete in 3 minutes. I will begin with 0,1, and 2 fact families. If they do not pass with 100% accuracy, students will be retested on either Monday or Friday. If they pass, they will be given the next fact family (3, 4, 5, etc..) Each Monday and Friday, I return your child's graded timed test with an attached blank test for you to use to help them prepare for the next test. Please review it with them. I also ask that students access "Math Facts in a Flash" from home as a way to review. It will begin at addition and subtraction. Students will need to successfully complete those facts before they can access multiplication drills. If you need another set of directions, please let me know. Another helpful tool was suggested by a parent. They found the web site: www.math-drills.com/multiplication.shtml very helpful. Individual multiplication facts are about 2/3 down the page. If you come across useful web sites, please feel free to share them :) Lastly, I included a fact sheet with fact families from 0-12 in your child's Friday folder last week. You can use it to make flashcards for home. I hope you find it helpful too!
Friday folders go home every week. Please review the included papers and return the folder to school every Monday morning. Don't forget to remove your child's Reading Log from the folder before returning it to school.
- Spelling words are always included in their Friday folder. I will send home a copy each Friday for you to keep for the week. If your child misplaces their words, they are available on the web site. Simply "click" on the spelling word icon. Words are updated each Friday.
Below I have included the following homework assignments:
- 100 minutes of reading per week a book of their choice (at their reading level). Each evening after completing their reading, please initial, date, and include the minutes they read in their reading log (I will provide these for them and distribute them on Monday). It is a wonderful opportunity for you to have your child read aloud to you.
- Math page from their math teacher.
Spelling for the month of May:
Monday: PCA
Tuesday: Spelling Headlines
Wednesday: Spelling pattern
Thursday: Write spelling once, write it without vowels once, and write it without consonants.
Each morning I will be checking the following: Spelling homework and planners (they should be signed every day).
Below, are a few items I would really like to have in our classroom:
1. New and used books for our classroom library
2. Dry erase markers (we use them quite a bit for our white board activities)
3. Books for the classroom!

Literature Circle Assignments
Students have begun their study of literature and are truly learning to "read for meaning." I am proud of how seriously they are taking their roles in each group. Their discussions are in-depth. I enjoy "listening in" on their discussions. Literature Circles meet on Wednesday's and Friday's. Students will be assigned their reading and roles on Monday's and Wednesday's. We will complete most of the work in class; however, unfinished reading and role assignments must be completed at home in preparation for the next meeting. I have explained to the class this reading does count toward their 20 minutes each night. Students are aware of the importance of coming to their group prepared and ready to contribute to the group discussion. The roles for Literature Circles are as follows:
Discussion Director: Responsible for facilitating the group discussion and asking "open-ended" questions relating to the story.
Connector: Responsible for making a text-to-text (book-to-book), text-to-self (book-to-self), or text-to-world (book-to-world) connection (i.e. how does the story relate to your own experiences?)
Artful Artist: Responsible for illustrating part of the story that is thought provoking or creates visualization.
Passage picker: Selects a passage from the assigned reading that is poignant or humorous and is required to practice reading the passage with inflection before presenting it to the group.
Word Wizard: Chooses vocabulary from the selected reading that is new and unfamiliar and is required to define and interpret the meaning to the group.
On Monday and Wednesday evenings, ask your child which role they are responsible for. It is a great way to encourage reading for meaning!
