Spelling homework is assigned every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. You may select from any of the following activities. Your spelling homework for Thursday night is to study for your spelling test.
1. ABC Order—Write all spelling words in alphabetical order on a piece of lined notebook paper.
2. Spelling Sentences—Choose 10 spelling words and write one sentence for each word. Underline the spelling word in each sentence. Remember to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with a punctuation mark. Sentences must be at least seven words in length.
3. Typed Words—Type all spelling words three times each and print the page to turn in. Have fun with fontsJ!
4. Spelling Story—Write a story using at least 10 spelling words. See if you can use them allJ! Underline each spelling word. Remember to use capitals and punctuation!
5. Spelling Newspaper Article—Write an article for a M.A.T.E.S. newspaper about something that is happening or has happened at our school using at least 10 spelling words. Underline the spelling words you use and edit your work. Include an illustration for your article. You may type your article if you would like.
6. Rainbow Words—Write each spelling word three times each using a different colored pencil for each time. In the end, you should have each word written in three different colors and you will have created a word rainbowJ!
7. Vowels and Consonants—Write each spelling word using one colored pencil for the vowels in each word and another colored pencil for the consonants in each word.
8. Word Definitions—Choose 5-10 spelling words to look up in the dictionary. Write each word and definition on a piece of lined notebook paper. You may use dictionary.com (find the link on the links page of our class web page) if you would like to use an online dictionary.
9. Create a Word Search—Use the web site puzzle-maker.com (find the link on the links page of our class web page) to create a word search using all of the week’s spelling words. Print it out and complete itJ!
10. Word Sort—Sort the spelling words by their spelling patterns. Label the groups and write on a piece of lined notebook paper.
11. Spelling Pretest—Have a parent give you a pretest at home. Write all misspelled words three times each. Please use lined notebook paper.
12. Word Values—Write the alphabet down a sheet of paper and assign each letter a value—1 for A, 2 for B, 3 for C until you get to 26 for Z. Now figure out the value for each spelling word. Example: If the word is cab, c is worth 3, a is worth 1 and b is worth 2. The total value of the word is 3+1+2=6. Write each spelling word and its value on a sheet of lined notebook paper. Circle the word that has the least value and the word that has the greatest value. You may use a calculator to add each word’s total value.
