Message from the Principal

Principal Photo
One of our goals this academic school year is to increase our Academic Performance Index(API). One sure-fire way of doing that is to increase the average daily attendance of our students. Marine View's current average attendance rate is 95.2% and our goal for this year is to increase it by 1.3% to 96.5%. In addition to lost academic time for students, Marine View loses a substantial amount of money due to ANY absence. There is a misconception that if you call your child's absence in as an illness, we do not lose funding. This is not the case. While we expect your child to stay home if he/she has a fever or is contagious, we also expect our students to be at school every day. Just in the first two months of school this year (and these are generally the best-attended school months of the year!), Marine View has lost $28,782 in funding! If this trend continues we will lose at least $150,000 at Marine View alone! Unfortunately, Marine View students lead the way when it comes to UNEXCUSED absences in the district. This means that parents are planning family vacations or increasing their weekends to three and four day weekends during instructional time. If you know that you will be out for some unavoidable reason and your child will miss a minimum of 5 school days, please let us know so that we can provide an independent study packet for your child. This will "Excuse" the absences and our school can recoup the funding. Please know that every day counts when it comes to your child's education and every cent counts when it comes to maintaining our schools. Please help us in our efforts of Every kid, Every day!

Mariner Dress Code Grades 6th-8th:

Please keep the following guidelines in mind when choosing your child's wardrobe:

1. Pants, shorts and skirts must be appropriate for school, no “short-shorts” or skirts shorter than mid-thigh. (A can of soda is a good tool for measuring the height above the knee…honest!)
2. Pants must fit the waist without the need for a belt. Pants hanging, drooping or being worn far below the waist will not be permitted.
3. NO spaghetti straps, tank tops, racer-back tops, halter or tube tops will be permitted. Shoulders should be covered.
4. Tops must reach the top of the pants at all times and tops must not be too tight or revealing and must not reveal undergarments.
5. Undergarments should not be visible on any student: this includes boxer shorts hanging out the tops of pants.
6. Shoes must be safe and appropriate for school. No shoes with open toes or heels; flip-flops, sandals or slippers (including Ugg-type boots) are not permitted.
7. Head coverings including beanies, hats, baseball caps, bandanas, and hoods are not allowed at school. The exception is the Marine View “bucket-hat” designed for sun protection.

In keeping with a “Business Environment” please remember the following:
• Absolutely NO tattoos (temporary or permanent.)
• Absolutely NO body piercings other than ear lobes.
• MAKE-UP IS NOT permitted for grades 6th through 8th.
• Jewelry that is distracting, disruptive or deemed inappropriate for middle school children will not be permitted.

BUS RIDERS 2011/2012

In order to ride the afternoon bus beginning October 19, 2011 students must present a bus pass upon request.
Bus passes are required to ride a school bus on the way home. As it is customary students will not be turned away from the morning bus if no bus pass is presented.
**A regular day bus schedule is available under the Bus Information & Forms tab**

ATTENDANCE **IMPORTANT**

At Marine View Middle School, we are committed to working with parents and students to provide the best possible educational experience. Students must be in school to take advantage of the educational opportunities available to them. Research tells us that students learn more when they attend school. While we know students do become ill and are unable to attend school, students should make their best effort and not miss school unless they are truly ill (i.e. Fever, vomiting,).

On-line Payments for Lunch Program

On the Ocean View School District's website there is a link called "My Nutrikids.com" this is the link for on-line payments. Parents will need to input their child's Permanent ID number to open an account. Please contact Food services Department to inquire about your child's Permanent ID number. This service does NOT include "cart" items to be prepaid such as: Pick-up sticks, Pizza, Pollo Loco etc.
Please contact Food Services @ 714-847-2551 ext. 1450 for more information.

Forgotten Items

We would like to remind all parents/guardians that we are only accepting lunch money or a sack lunch for our students. [No soft drinks/soda should be brought to school]. Homework/books will be placed directly into the subject's teacher inbox. Students must remember to come by the office and check if there has been a lunch "drop-off" since the office is not able to deliver nor interrupt instructional time for forgotten items. Note: P.E. teachers have "loaners" when P.E. clothes are forgotten.

Student Pick-up

At Marine View Middle School student safety is a top priority. Please remember to bring proper identification in order to pick up a student early from school. Person present must be listed on the emergency card in order to be able to take any student. Parents are able to add/delete emergency contacts at any time by coming to the office in person and making that change on their child(ren) emergency card. Please remember that during P.E. and Assembly days it is difficult to get a hold of students. For your convenience Assembly days will be listed on our calendar [home page] and assemblies begin promptly at 1:10 p.m. right after lunch. For your convenience we have posted a copy of our bell schedule under the Principal's Newsletter tab.

Cell Phone Policy

Marine View Middle School will continue implementing the following cell phone policy:
Cell Phone/Electronics
The Marine View Middle School administration, faculty, and staff abide by the OVSD Board Policy which allows students to bring cell phones to school. However, cell phone and other electronic device usage has become a very disruptive concern in the classroom and on campus. Text messaging, phone calls, and listening to iPods interfere with learning and result in the loss of valuable instructional time. In order to maintain and support an effective instructional environment the following cell phone/electronic device policy will be implemented for the remainder of the 2009/10 school year.

During the entire school day, 7:40 a.m.—2:10 p.m., and during all school sponsored events cell phones and all other electronic devices are to be TURNED OFF and put away.
Any use of a cell phone or an electronic device in the classroom or on campus will result in immediate confiscation by the teacher. NO WARNINGS WILL BE ISSUED.
Confiscated electronic devices will ONLY BE RETURNED ON MONDAYS by the administrators when ONE of the following options is fulfilled:

Completing 1 hour of after school detention on Thursday.
Attending a student/parent/administrator conference on Monday morning at 8:00 a.m. in the Principal’s office.
Making a $20.00 donation. The monies collected will support our technology program.

MARINE VIEW MIDDLE SCHOOL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LOST, STOLEN OR MISPLACED CELL PHONES OR OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES.
