Welcome to fourth grade at Matthew Turner School! I am pleased to be your child’s teacher this year. Fourth grade is a time of great social, emotional, and academic growth. It is my hope that, working as a team, we will provide the best possible experience for your child. Thank you for being here and supporting this effort.

LIBRARY BOOKS/COMPUTER LAB Our class will visit the Library and Computer Lab on Friday morning. Library books may be taken home but a book must be returned before another is checked out.

P.E./MUSIC
Fourth grade classes participate in P.E. on Tuesday with Mr. Doran. Please be sure your child wears appropriate shoes and clothing to participate in the activities. Music happens on Thursdays.

HOMEWORK
All homework is a reinforcement or extension of class instruction. Look for homework Monday – Thursday. The students copy their daily homework in their Student Planner. Special homework, notes on classroom happenings, or projects will be e-mailed at the beginning of each week. Daily reading toward the weekly 100 minutes of reading is considered part of this homework. All homework is to be turned in at 8:40 on the day that it is due. Please allow your children to be responsible for this. Keeping track of their own assignments is an important skill for fourth graders. Students will also be instructed on how to develop good study techniques and habits. Unless a student is also bringing home class work that needs to be completed, homework should never take more than an hour of honest effort each night.

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Structure is the organizational foundation of the classroom. It paves the
way for cooperation and learning by clarifying rules and expectations and by
defining the path we want our students to stay on. Many conflicts and
behavior problems are prevented because children know what is expected.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS
All students should arrive to class prepared with two sharpened pencils, books, and materials ready.
•	Tardy students should enter the classroom quietly with a tardy slip, begin opener
activity, or join class in progress.
•	Students should remain seated unless given permission to leave their seat.
•	Students are expected to raise their hands to ask questions or make comments
unless the teacher has set aside a special period for free and spontaneous discussion
•	Students should ask questions or make comments that are relevant to instruction.
•	Students should show tolerance and respect for the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs of
others in the classroom.
•	When students complete their assignments early, they should have something else to work
on (e.g., reading or enrichment activity).
