Easy Tips on How to Be Successful in Language Arts 8

  • To be on time you need to be already seated before the bell starts to ring with all of your materials and your "yummy" book on your desk. Homework should be out and ready to be checked.
  • Evidence of reading daily for 1/2 hour is shown by reading during the first minutes of class daily and by keeping a record on your reading record. 1500 pages per trimester is the goal for most students, but you should set a personal goal consistent with your skills. For many this is not enough reading!
  • Homework checks and homework credit is given during silent reading. Those points are not available after that time unless youwere absent. This is a reward for keeping up with the homework and easy points to get, so take advantage of this great deal!
  • Dismissal at the end of class is done in a timely manner by the teacher when everyone is seated, quiet and the room is ready. No books should be left on the tables. The bell is not the signal to leave the room.
  • Backpacks must be completely under your table to keep the aisles cleared.
  • Skateboards and scooters must be completely under the counter with the aisle cleared.
  • Late Work: Anything not handed in when it is collected at the beginning of the period is late and gets reduced credit. If you need to print work , you must do this before or after school, during recess or lunch, so plan ahead. Personal "yummy" book time is not time to do homework or print work.
  • It is acceptable to submit work in black or blue ink, but it's more efficient for you to type it if you can. That makes revisions and editing much easier.
  • Use 12 point type only in Times or Roman.
  • If you are absent, check the Teacherweb.com for assignments and talk to a classmate. You get as many days extra to make-up work as you were absent.
  • Passes: You get three passes per trimester to use for visits to the library, emergency bathroom orwater fountain visits. The passes are not acceptable for bathroom or water after lunch or recess, since you have plenty of time to take care of that then. Of course emergencies are exceptions. If you have not use your passes, you may turn them in at the end of the trimester for extra credit points.
  • Water bottles with your name on them are recommended, especially during hot weather.
