                    designed the Vocabulary Chart for this unit.

                    B.  All words are tested

Enjoy your Friday break.  Read your book.  The book report is due next Thursday.


October 19 through 23:

English:  Book Report:  Oral and Art due October 22.
                        1. Check your Student Handbook on pages 30 for a
                           beginning outline and page 33 for the rubric.
                        2. I gave you a model outline last week.  Use it to
                           pattern your outline.

Social Studies:  Time Line of Islamic Civilization.  This will begin in the 
                 classroom.  Use ink to go over pencil marks and draw small
                 drawings in color to represent the event in history. 
                 Due October 23.

         Social Studies Long Term Project.  You will select a Middle Eastern
                or North African country to create a brochure.  The directions
                will be given in class.  Research in the library.  This   
                project will be due November 13. Models of previous projects
                will help you understand how to do it!



October 26 through October 30


English:  1.  Vocabulary Test covering packets # 1, 2, and 3.
              Friday, October 30. 

          2.  Medallion of the character each student selected for 
              their Third Book Report THE ILIAD.  On their medallion 
              each student will print the character's name in the 
              outer border, centered in the middle.  A passage 
              from the book that describes the character will be on
              the lower half of the outer border.  The narrow stripe 
              circling around the larger border will be colored in a 
              color that complements the drawing in the center.  The 
              center drawing is of the character in the book.  The 
              medallion is due October 29, Thursday.

Social Studies: 1. Read the Chapter from Across the Centuries pages 95
                   through page 100.  Read the sidebars and captions 
                   under the pictures or beside the pictures.  Answer
                   questions: 1, 2, 3, and 4.   Restate the question in
                   the answer, for example:  1. The Islamic culture
                        influenced Spain......(you write your answer)
                   Due October 29, Thursday.


Homework for the Week of November 2 through November 6

A. English:  

1. Write a summary of the, no more than 2/3 or 3/4 of a page in size 12 font.
You will add it to the summary of the prologue you wrote earlier. Revise and
edit the prologue.  Some wrote a long prologue, and you may want to cut it
down. See The Iliad booklet for added information on how to write the paper. 
Next week, the assignment will be to write a paragraph describing your
character and to develop your thesis for the rest of the paper.

      The summary of the Iliad is due November 6
      The final written paper is due November 20


B.  Social Studies:

1. Prepare for the final test in the Islamic Empire.  The test will begin on
Thursday and completed on Friday.  It is an open notebook test, therefore, you
need to have all the papers in the notebook organized according to the Table
of Content.  The notebooks will graded on the weekend of November 7 and 8. If
you have all of your papers, you should be successful. 

      The test will begin November 5 and completed on November 6 in class.


Homework:  November 9 through 13

English:  The Iliad
                1.  Write a full description of the character you followed in the reading.  Think about 
                      appearances, actions, thoughts, development of the individual throughout timer.
                 2. Develop a thesis about the three attributes you want to focus on in the body of the
                      paper.  Do Not say: Achilles was strong, brave, and valiant.  Develop each idea, making 
                      a three sentence development of the ideas.  One sentence for each.  
                 3.  Vary sentence beginnings as you should throughout the final paper:
                       A. Use participial phrases, prepositional, and infinitive phrases to introduce a
                            main clause.
                       B. Reread the paragraph over and over to eliminate: very, nice, just, lots, got, get, and       
                            gotten.  Check your Writer's Handbook page 2.
                       C. Eliminate forms of to be for active verbs:   is, was, were, etc. 

Social Studies:  Middle East/African Brochure
                 1. Turn in two copies of your completed brochure.
                 2. Revise and edit the work you have developed.
                 3. Size 10 font
                 4. Fill all empty spaces with pictures of the region.  No blank spaces.
                 5. Check you assignment packet for other specific directions.


Homework:  November 16 through 20

English:  The Iliad       Due November 20
                1.  Complete The Iliad project:  a written book report.
                2.  Check the handbook given for ideas in revision.
                       a. Develop the three-chunk paragraphs using the sheets provided in class
                       b. Revise, revise, revise...., then edit for those pesky, small grammatical errors


Social Studies:  Africa     Due November 20
                1.  Create an African Vocabulary poster using the list of vocabulary words provided on 
                      Monday, November 16.
                      a. use the paper provided
                      b. the poster is vertical not horizontal
                      c. see models in class of the Islamic posters.

      Remember:  Work can be turned in ahead of time
                             Pace yourself throughout the week to complete your work on time.


November 30 through December 4

English:

           1. Vocabulary #4, remember there is a quiz on Friday.  Due December 4

Social Studies:

           1. History Alive!  This work is on Chapter 12.  Early Societies of West Africa
                a.  Read the textbook pages carefully
                b. Complete the handout in detail.  Print neatly or use cursive script neatly

           2. A long term assignment:  Ethnic Group Newsletter.  Research is in the classroom and on the       
                internet at home.  A handout will be given on Tuesday, December 1. The project will be due
                December 15.
