Green class: Islamic Civilization poster is due September 22

English:
1. Vocabulary Worth Knowing (a sheet handed to students). Read the directions and complete. We
will
initiate out vocabulary work this week with this assignment. Whatever words you select, you must
use
them in a well-developed sentence. See your Writer's Handbook, page 1. Due September 24.
2. Show Not Tell: A. The puppy was a terror. Head your paper with A Puppy Was a Terror, but do
not
use the word terror in the writing. Select words to show this behavior. Be sure to type your name in
the upper right hand corner with the date and class color. Center the title. Indent paragraphs if
there
are more than one. Only one writing due to the book report. Due September 23.
3. Book Report: The book should be completed on Saturday, September 20, leaving five days to
complete the oral or the art report. The reports are due Thursday, September 25. No late reports.
See
papers in the Student Handout and the flow chart with examples of an outline. Use the first example
and create a small 3x 5 card with main topics and a card for the quoted passages you will use in
your
speech. Practice giving your speech using the basic qualities of a good speech.

Show Not Tell: I'd like to get more information. Use ideas from class. Due October 14
Show Not Tell: Tim told us a funny story. Due October 16
Remember: Show Not Tell is descriptive writing. Slow down the action so the reader sees the
actions of the individual you are writing about. Use clear descriptive verbs. Avoid "got"
whenever you begin to use the word. There are so many other words you might select. Use the
Writer's Handbook for suggestions, as well as, the sheet you received in class on Monday!
Social Studies:

English:

Social Studies:
"Islamic Spain" from Across the Centuries pages 95 through 100. Questions 1, 2, 3, and 4. Restate
questions before answering and type your work.
October 27 through October 31
Complete the Middle Eastern Brochure. Give me two copies. Turn in the internet research papers if
you have added more cites. Remember it should look like the model I gave you in the graphic
representation. On the landscape mode, three fold, and back to back. Check the rubric which I gave
you before! Due October 31.
No other homework.
November 3, 2008 through November 7
Future Homework: Book Report: The Iliad by Homer Barbara Leonie Picard version due Nov. 14. All
Written Reports!
This Weeks Homework:
English: Vocabulary 4 with a quiz on Friday (easy)
The Iliad: Summarize the prologue to the Iliad: make it smaller (1/4 of a page) if possible from the
original summary you did earlier. Take your notes and summarize the entire story (3/4 of a page.
Altogether both should be a page. Due Friday, November 7
Social Studies: A Country Issue. An editorial on the country selected for the brochure. Due Friday,
November 7. No more than one page. See directions. The directions are also on the internet:

November 10 through November 15
English: Book Report: The Iliad by Homer, translated by Barbara Leonie Picard, due November 15
All
reports are written using the directions in The Iliad Packet and the work we discussed in class.
Social Studies: The African Vocabulary Chart. Each student has a word. Follow the directions given
on the list of words. Due November 15.
November 17 through November 28:
English: Vocabulary 5 work completed by November 28 with a quiz on Friday, November 28

1. Vocabulary # 4,5,6 Test. Be sure to take the last three sets you completed and study from
these papers. Did you make vocabulary cards for each unit when it was assigned? Friday,
December 12. The test can be given on Tursday December 11 if the classes agree.
Social Studies:
1. African Ethnic Newsletter. Back to Back computer generated newsletter. Use the rubric to judge
work before you turn it in to me. Check for spelling errors: there, their are still a source of errors.
The work is due December 12. Two copies turned in.
2. African vocabulary test: Friday, December 12. Use your list of vocabulary words for study.
FUTURE: next week. Map test of Africa (Friday, December 19) and
your book report: Fantasy (Thursday, December 18 ).
