Required material:
You can purchase most of this music from the Magic Flute or from JW Pepper (1-800-345-6292)

5th grade Beginning Band- Standard of Excellence Book 1 (enhanced version with CD)

Cadet Band and Junior Band- Standard of Excellence Book 2 (enhanced version with CD)/ Standard of 
Excellence Book 1 (optional, but good for review or beginning musicians)/ Standard of Excellence 
Book Jazz Ensemble Method (comes with Rhythm Study play-a-long CD, but you will also need to 
order an additional CD called Full Jazz Ensemble Charts). 

Intermediate Band- Standard of Excellence Advanced Jazz Ensemble Method  (comes with Rhythm

The first combined rehearsal will be on 10/14

Make-up lessons (mandatory for any students who misses a before school sectional):

5th grade sectionals:
Lessons start the week of 9/28 and will continue for the entire school year.  

Saxophone lessons-
Monday's 7:30- 8:15 am

Brass (trumpet/horn/baritone/trombone)-
Tuesday's 7:30- 8:15 am

Flute-
Wednesday's 7:30- 8:15 am

Clarinet-
Thursday's 7:30- 8:15 am

Percussion-
Friday's 7:30- 8:15 am

MVSD Band Calendar (2008- 2009):
11/11- No School and no beginning band practice after school.

11/13- Combined Rehearsal- Advanced and Intermediate Band at lunch.

11/14- Jazz Combos at Northgate Shopping Center. 11- noon.

11/17- Mr. Carnahan will present a master class at College of Marin along with Juke Joint Band.  We 
will cover the blues as a form and concept and how it lead to rock'n'roll.  It will take place in the 
COM auditorium.  7:15- 9 pm (free).

11/20- Combined Rehearsal- Junior and Cadet Band at lunch.

11/27- Mr. Carnahan will perform at IKEA in Emeryville with Juke Joint Band. noon-2 pm (free).

12/4- Combined lunch rehearsal- Advanced and Intermediate bands.

12/11- Combined lunch rehearsal- Junior and Cadet bands.

12/17- Combined lunch rehearsal- all bands!

12/17: Winter Band concert (all bands- no percussion ensemble) 7 pm.

12/18- No 5th grade classes before school and MVMS students do not need to bring an instrument.

2/10: Chamber and Solo ensemble night (at the Throckmorton Theater- both MVMS percussion 
ensembles will perform and both MVMS jazz combos will perform). 7 pm.

4/23: All day tour to Great America (Advanced Drum Line, Intermediate Band and Advanced Band)

6/2: Percussion Ensembles and Jazz Combos Spring Recital in the MVMS Band Room.  7 pm.

6/8: Spring Band concert (all bands and percussion ensembles). 7 pm.

Spring Tours to the Elementary Schools (Advanced Band only- TBA)
Scholarship Auditions- TBA
