Mrs. K's Reef Report

Welcome to Mrs K's Reef Report! Every week a student from Mrs K's class will write a short summary of some of the things we did during the week.

Week of May 25th and June 1st by Josh

Oh, Wow this has been one heck of a week! We have finished our Civil War unit and started a new
project on the Progressive Era. (The students are researching issues during the Progressive Era and
creating PowerPoints to use in their presentations to the class - Mrs. K) In writing, we are finishing
up our "About the Author" papers and are starting a new writing called Dedications. This writing involves writing dedications to the people who inspired us in our writing. Since the school year is coming to an end we don't have a lot of homework. Good job 5th graders on the Havdallah service Saturday. It was amazing.

Week of May 5 by Koby

This week we have been mostly working on social studies and writing. We’ve been writing letters to home pretending we fought in the Civil War. In social studies, we learned what happened at the end of the Civil War and it’s details. We even made comic strips about the Civil War using Comic Life.

See Ya,
Koby

Week of April 20th and April 27th by Koby

The past two weeks we have done a lot of social studies and writing. We learned about the Battle of Bull Run and Gettysburg and went on a Civil War Adventure to Riley Farms. In Writing we wrote a journal entry about our Spring Break, began a persuasive essay to persuade someone to help the North or South in the Civil War and we wrote poetry about Havdalah.

Week of March 31st by Benjamin

The 5th and 6th graders had another great week. First, the entire school went on a hike with Josh Lake
at O'Neill Park. When the 5th and 6th grade got back, they wrote some poetry about the trip. In Judaica, the class took a trip to L.A. to The Museum of Tolerance to learn about the Holocaust. Also, the class has finished studying about the American Revolution. ( Mrs. K - We will begin the study of Americans fighting Americans in the worst war of American history - Civil War) Finally, the 5th grade has been learning about Stocks and got to spend $10,000 on buying fake stocks. They made a table in Numbers to show the profits or losses from their stocks.

Week of March 16 by Benjamin

It has been a great week for the 5th and 6th grade. They have been learning about the Declaration
of Independence and the Revolutionary War. They got to read the Declaration and interpret different parts of it. Half of the class is reading Johnny Tremain and the other half is reading The Fighting Ground in small reading groups. Both books take place during the Revolution from the perspective of a child fighting for independence. Finally, the 5th and 6th grade had a math test. I hope they got good grades.

Signing off,
Ben Don

Week of March 2nd to March 9th By Hannah

Two weeks ago the class made Revolutionary War Era timelines. Mrs. K gave us different dates
of events that happened during this time. Then, we had to research and find the order they
were in. We also started working on Podcasts for battles from the American Revolution.

Last week we started reading new books in groups. Johnny Tremain is one of the books and the
other is Avi: The Fighting Ground. We read a little bit each week and then we have tests on Friday,
(Mrs. K says, "Before we are assessed on our reading, we have discussions in our student led groups and share the questions, summaries, and reactions that we have completed for the week. This provide the students with an opportunity to control their own learning; to share thoughts, concerns and their understanding of the events of the novel.)

Thank you for catching a wave in Mrs. K's classroom.

See ya,
Hannah Traktman

Week of February 9 By Lauren

This week we did so much. We wrote a Newspaper article on the Civil War. The Newspaper atricle wasabout any battle and general from the Civil War. We had to write about what happened in the battle, who won and a few facts about what happened. The article on the general was about what wars the general fought and his life in general. We also finished the First Colonies unit in social studies, worked on finishing our diaries or journal entries from the 1700's, had a math test and learned how to smooth out our  choppy writing, and finished our novels Across Five Aprils and The Witch of Blackbird Pond. Across Five Aprils was about a little boy name Jethro. His family of 8 people decided to send 4 of his family members off to fight the Civil War. Three of the members go to one side, but one chooses otherwise. In the end only three of the brothers come home. (Mrs. K says, "I think it was a busy week! ")

Week of February 4th by Aish

On Monday, the fifth and sixth grade class went to Star Ranch where we had a lot of fun.
Then we finished up our Colonial times journal entries. In Language Arts we did a lot of
Grammer this week. (Mrs. K says " We reviewed Prepositions and Prepositional Phrases and learned
how to vary our sentence beginnings in our writing with prepositional phrases) For reading, we finished two books, Across Five Aprils and The Witch of Blackbird Pond. On Friday, we had our Spelling test ("and comprehension test for the novel we are reading" said Mrs. K.) The Leave Only Footprints event was on Sunday. Josh Lake was there and Ms. Pratt did an art project. There were animals like a snake and a rabbit and a group that is called The Bicycle Tree that helps teach you how to fix your bikes. And of course the 3rd annual trash in show.

That's all folks Aish
