Welcome to MHT Technology. This year we will revisit our existing computer curriculum to increase the use of computers as an educational learning tool to support out core Kindergarten through Eighth Grade curriculum subjects. At the same time, the Technology Center computers are a productivity tool which will enable our students to succeed in a world of increased educational/vocational demands. We want to ensure that our students obtain a balance of both core subject learning and productivity while they meet the technology standards outlined through the Diocese of San Jose’. As a result, based upon grade level, we will emphasize the following outcomes and supporting tools that will promote success in the classroom and in life.

  1. Students Outcomes:

By the end of each school year, MHT students will become more proficient in the following task areas (based on grade level). By the completion of Eighth Grade, they should master all listed task areas:

  • Demonstrate correct computer ergonomics
  • Increase typing speed and accuracy
  • Demonstrate basic computer terminology
  • Identify and demonstrate proper use of computer hardware
  • Demonstrate basic competency with at least 3 types of software applications
  • Conduct internet research given a specific course subject
  • Create one or more computer projects/  Which reinforces classroom subject/s
  • Practice moral and ethical Internet use

  1. Technology Support- Tools to meet these Outcomes

Our Philosophy is to provide students with training materials that empower them to use technology as a tool for subject related tasks in school and home. Your children are exposed to early reading, writing and typing programs (primarily K-3), as well as Microsoft Office “tools of technology” at various levels of complexity based on their particular grade level (ranging between grades 4-8). Following are the tools and skills which the computer resources lab sessions will emphasize:

Grades k-3

·       Read Write & type – Grades k-3 (primarily) phonics-base program combining reading, writing and typing

·       Starfall.com- Reading/Language Arts Curriculum that is creative and combines content area instruction in social studies and science.

·       Microsoft Paint- Drawing program

·       Microsoft word- word processing

                                                           Grades 4-8

                   ·       Microsoft word- word processing
                   ·       Power Point- Presentations

 ·       Internet Explorer- Research & Inquiry

·       Excel- Chards Graphs & Spreadsheets

  1. Using Technology in the Home

When your children use technology resources-including “going online” – in an appropriate and responsible manner, with an educational purpose- as they do in school- “The internet” is truly an excellent educational tool! When we, as parents, allow our children to go online in the home, in an unsupervised capacity, we are taking a risk. As we hear about often in the media, your children will not have to look for trouble online because it will find them. Please be discerning if you allow unsupervised use of online resources in your home. If you have a computer at home and you would like to see it used to its fullest educational potential in a safe way, here are two simple tips:

Place your computer in a “public” living area of your home.  This will allow you as a parent to monitor anything that may be “downloaded” from the internet.

If you do allow unsupervised use of your computer at home, be sure to check the history on a regular basis. Purchasing Anti-virus software is an excellent investment.
