Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions
of students and parents.
- Do you need help in the classroom?
- May I bring treats for my child's birthday or Star Student week?
- What are some ways I can help my child with homework?
Do you need help in the classroom?
Yes. There are several ways to help. Mrs. Sands appreciates help
during art time. Mrs. Thomas always appreciates help
during P.E. time. I can also use help in the classroom when
Mrs.Grens is not there. If you want to help, let me know and I
will work with you on a time that works for both of us.
May I bring treats for my child's birthday or Star Student week?
Of course. Birthdays are special days which should be celebrated,
and many parents choose to bring snacks to celebrate their
child's "Star Student" week. Sweet snacks are fine, but a few
parents have commented on "too many sweets at school". I agree
that healthy snacks are a better choice, but I also feel
that sweets are fine within reason. If your child has dietary
restrictions, I should know about this.
What are some ways I can help my child with homework?
Homework, in third grade, is a practice for the lessons that were
taught that day or a needed review of previous lessons.
*The students must record their assignments in their assignment
notebooks. Parents should check and see if this is actually
occurring.
*Parents should provide a space in the home for homework that is
free of distractions and disruptions (NO TV!!).
*Parents should be available to answer questions about the
assignment. If it is clear that the child needs extra help to
complete the assignment ("doesn't get it"), parents should
reteach/explain as best they can. If this is a problem, write a
note to me and send it with the homework the next day.
*Parents should only "check" the homework to check for
understanding, not with the goal of perfection in mind. If you
see an error or two, LEAVE IT ALONE!
*Lastly, please see that your child puts the completed work in
his/her backpack. Do NOT do this task for them.
*The purpose of homework is twofold:
1. Practice of skills/concepts
2. Building good, lifelong study habits and organizational skills
