I also want to thank you all for making me feel so special during this Teacher Appreciation Week. You have spoiled me with such delicious lunches and sweet gifts and cards. Thank you for being so sweet.  You are all very special to me.

Please use ixl.com for at least 30 minutes each day.

See you tomorrow.

Wow! JA BizTown is only two weeks away! We will be interviewing for jobs on Wednesday, May 30.

Here are some examples of a resume and a cover letter to help you make your own.

New-Resume

Cover-Letter3

Come to school Wednesday, May 30th prepared to interview and to impress:

Dr. Baird, Dr. Miyashiro, Mr. Jewel and Ms. Mayeda, the power team from our district office, who will be interviewing applicants for their positions/jobs at J.A.BizTown.

Dress for success! Come to school ready to interview. The interviews will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day. All students who are prepared with a resume, cover letter, and an application will have the opportunity to interview for the position/job that they want to apply for at BizTown. We are expecting all students to make the effort.

You can show a well prepared Keynote presentation or PowerPoint, carry a briefcase with your cover letter and resume, show how neat you can look in your best clothes, give out business cards, and do what you think will make you stand out and leave a lasting positive impression with the interviewers. As we have shared with you, neatness counts, and using your polite manners leaves a good impression ! Gentlemen should wear nice shirts with ties and neat slacks and our young ladies should be dressed in a dress or skirt wearing their best clothes and a smile. This will be fun for all who participate.

You'll all know your job assignments by Friday. We will be forming our business communities, practicing our math skills, writing checks, preparing business loan papers, creating advertisements for your businesses, and practicing communication skills within your company.

BizTown ...................Here we come! Ready for a fantastic day! Thank you to the parents that volunteered to help us at J.A. BizTown. You are deeply appreciated!

Come to school Wednesday prepared to WOW!

Special thanks extended to Mrs. Lopez for helping us with this incredible field trip opportunity.

See you all tomorrow night at Open House in room 17.

Dear Parents,                                    May Newsletter

You can click on the Newsletter link in the left-hand column for a list of what we will be doing over the course of the next couple of weeks.

It’s that time of year again. Our students will be able to demonstrate to us what they have accomplished learning this school year in the fifth grade. We make a concerted effort to have our students prepared; so, we encourage them to consume a hearty breakfast and to have a restful night of sleep before each day of testing. Please do not make any appointments for your child during the testing window (May 7th –May 18th). We will be testing on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week.

Since our main focus will be State Testing for the next two weeks, there will be a minimal amount of homework. Of course, your child should be preparing for the WAX MUSEUM on May 24th by reading and finishing preparations for their speech. Please encourage them not to wait until the last minute. They need to practice their 2-3 minute speech and have their costume ready ahead of time. This event will be the night of Open House (May 24th).

We are also busy with studying and preparing for our visit to JA BizTown. We have attached a volunteer sign-up sheet for those parents who are willing to work and spend the day at BizTown with the fifth grade classes on June 7th. Please save the date, if you would like to help with this event. This is an all day commitment. This experience for your child will be one of their most memorable from their elementary school years.

April 30, 2012

I certainly missed all of you; however, I needed to get better before I could return to school. We have such busy weeks ahead of us and we all need to be well and rested, including me. This is our final week before testing and we’ll have some fun with building the right focused yet relaxed attitude about taking the Star Test. You received a flyer home that gave a schedule of what you could wear each day. Of course, this isn’t mandatory but we’ll have fun with it. I’ve planned a few surprises in preparation for the testing weeks ahead that I’ll be sharing them with all of you.

The STAR TESTING is scheduled for May 7th – May 18th.  We won't be taking our first test until the 8th of May. Ask your parents to have a hearty breakfast for you and come to school after a restful night of sleep each and every day. Please be prompt and at school early. The testing is over a two-week period with testing on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. I know that you'll be so disappointed but you'll have very little homework over the testing weeks. However, please continue to read your biography and prepare your costume for the night of Open House -May 24th. Additionally, you need to study all three quizlet.com Science Study Cards daily, do homework assigned for BizTown preparation, ixl.com assignments, and practice INTEGERS by clicking the word integers in bold type or go to the link on our Math Links page. I am showing you how to use it on Monday.

Parents..........................

I would also like to ask parents to donate fruit for snacks in the mornings before our testing begins each day. We’ll need lots of bananas and oranges. I can cut them up fresh each day and have them prepared for a treat.

Please no appointments for your child during the testing window.

May 7th –May 18th

There will not be a lot of homework during the testing weeks; although, there will be some science review using quizlet.com and your child is expected to read both Blood on the River and their biography. Please help them to prepare for the Wax Museum on May 24th the night of OPEN HOUSE.

Happy to be back,

Ms. Hull

Positive Thought:

“Respect! Show it and you’ll earn it!”

Just in case you take a peek at our website, I have some reminders and requests for all of Hull's Crew. Please, please, please.............read, read, and read. I also want to remind you to use ixl.com. On our return to school we will be starting our P.E. testing for the state program, so it would be wise on your part to continue to walk or run, as often as possible. Your test will consist of a one mile timed walk/ run. You can run the entire time, if you are prepared and in shape or walk briskly to make the required time. We've been practicing, so continue to practice over the final part of the break.

I have been enjoying my time off. I've accomplished a lot having to do with school in my free time. I ‘ve spent many days in Orange County visiting with family too. Be safe and enjoy the remaining time off and be ready to return prepared to work hard.

Finally, great news……our ixl.com points are over 140,000 ! You know if you’ve spent time using ixl.com and contributed to this class goal,if not, you still have time. See you all soon.

Love,

Ms. Hull

Parent Conferences and minimum day schedule all week. I am looking forward to meeting with your parents. They have your report card and reminder of scheduled conference time. It helps if we are all prompt , since I have many parents to meet with this week. I do offer phone conferences for those who are unable to keep their scheduled conference. Just have your parents  jot me a note if this is something they need to do.

Please remember to study both the final regions of the United States to pass the test on www.sheppardsoftware.com and study the final trimester list of prefixes and suffixes that was sent home today. You can also access lists under printable documents on our site. Final tests won't be given until the end of May but I want you to know what is ahead for the third trimester.

Distinguished Dolphins honorees will be honored on Monday, February 13th at 9:15 in the MPR.

Congratulations this month to Teddy and Bianca!

Many of you have faithfully participated using ixl.com  for at least 30 minutes per day , but some of you aren't doing the required time. This is your assigned daily homework and  as as you all know you can access this site on your iPads, so this is a doable assignment. Please be diligent and do your part. It does make a difference in helping  your understanding of math skills. Congratulations to the many of you that have done such a spectacular job in achieving this goal! WOW!

Finally, Reading Counts is also part of your homework and I want you to discuss with your parents how many points you have amassed and that your trimester goal is 105 points by the first week in March. Are you there yet?

    10/03/11

This year is flying by too quickly. We have a lot to accomplish during the next two weeks before the October break. You will all need to focus on your trimester goals and checking them off on your desktop. I will be meeting with each of you and evaluating what you have accomplished  thus far. You have your list of goals ;it is your job to stay focused and achieve your goals.

    9/12/11

    Hi Hull's Crew,

I missed seeing all of you on Friday, but I hope you spent some time reading to prepare for quizzes on Reading Counts. Your first  goal is to achieve 35 points. Some of you have already reached your goal and surpassed  the next trimester goal.Keep reading! The more that you read the better you become at reading. We didn't have our math test  on Friday since we were not in school ;however, we will have it on Tuesday. Be prepared!

    • In Language Arts we are reading the story “Volcanoes.”
    • The  skills we are working on are: subjects, predicates, root words, capitalization, and sequence of events.
    • In math we are finishing our first Topic: Numeration. There will be a rescheduled test on Tuesday.
    • In social studies we will begin a unit of study on Early Americans.
    • In science we have begun our unit of study on Water Resources and Weather in preparation for our field trip to the U.S.S. Midway on October 5th.

I am thrilled that you are all enjoying our TLP rotations and the teachers are equally thrilled that you are a very well-behaved and delightful group of students. I am very proud of all of you! It is easier to learn in an environment in which  each of you is committed  and respectful. The TLP teachers love working with the fifth grade.

    Great job !!

Important to note........Please return your field trip permission slips and your parent goal-setting conference form that I sent home last week. All appointments will be finalized by Monday.

    Dear Families and Students,
We will be sending home notices for upcoming Goal-Setting conferences. They are being scheduled earlier than conference week since Ms. Hull will be attending her daughter’s wedding in late September. Be watching for the paperwork to schedule your time coming home this week.
In Language Arts this week, we will be reading Volcanoes by Seymour Simon. Some of the skills that we will be studying are: subjects, predicates, sequence of events, root words, descriptive writing, singular nouns, and plural nouns.
In Math this week, we will continue to work through Topic 1: Numeration. This will focus on place value, comparing and ordering whole numbers, decimal place value, and comparing and ordering decimals. There will be a Topic 1 test this Friday.
In Social Studies we will continue learning about the states and the different regions that make up our country. The students have begun taking the tests on the first three regions. Students who want to challenge themselves can take a written test once they pass the online version. For this test, spelling will count, and a score of 90% will be required in order to earn a rubric 4 on their report cards.
We are excited to let you know that we will be able to take our classes on a very worthwhile field trip to the U.S.S. Midway on October 5th. This event will be the culminating activity for our study of the weather in science. Please consider volunteering to chaperone since we will be in need of at least six volunteers per class. We are planning to take a bus. Have a fantastic week.
