The Art Muses
According to Greek mythology, Muses are the nine deities of the creative
arts believed to provide guidance and inspiration to artists, poets and
musicians alike. The Art Muses program contains the biographies of well-
known artists and focuses on the aesthetic value of their artwork, serving
as an “Art Muse” to inspire elementary school students. In alignment with
the California Visual Art Standards, this program may be used as a catalyst
to enhance other content areas, such as history, math and social studies.
Units consist of age-appropriate and easy-to-follow lesson plans, a related
key vocabulary list and glossary, complete unit materials list, an up-to-
date resource guide, supplemental materials and more. The title of each
lesson plan incorporates a direct quote from the individual artist and is
designed to have an energetic appeal to both students and their instructors
alike.
The Forum
Artists and their bodies of work are introduced by professional storyteller
and program founder, Tracie Keatinge, at the Art Muses Forum: On-site
Lecture Series. During these art assemblies, “Art Muses” are brought to life
through different forms of visual media, including a full-color slide show,
using a DLP® projector and the latest in Apple® presentation technology.
Following Art Muses Forum presentations, students are encouraged to
participate in a guided group discussion where they may expand on the ideas
presented, forming their thoughts and ideas about what an artist’s intention
might have been when he or she was inspired to create featured works of
art. “Miss Tracie” has the ability to make the life stories of each
celebrated artist come to life, as she captivates and inspires the minds of
young children.
The Studio Session
The Art Muses Studio Sessions are meant to represent the time a professional
artist spends working in a studio, giving students the opportunity to create
their own inspired works of art while working in the classroom. Following a
brief biographical review, students are directed through a step-by-step,
hands-on-activity based on a single work of art by a featured “Art Muse”. A
full-color reproduction of the spotlighted artwork provided for each lesson
is used as a tool to further establish recognition of each distinctive
artist, his or her medium and their noteworthy style. Although each activity
has specific steps, students are always encouraged to “Be Inspired!”, by
incorporating their one-of-a-kind perspective and creativity. The use of
recycled materials is encouraged whenever possible throughout the course of
The Art Muses program.
