I am so happy to welcome everyone to our classroom and a terrific year in third grade. I look forward to meeting each of our fabulous third graders and their families. We're wild about learning in third grade!
I hope everyone is having a fantastic holiday. There will be a spelling test covering unit 15 on Friday, January 8. We will continue working on multiplication facts during the next few weeks. Encourage your child to use flash cards to review these basic facts. Our goal is to have all basic facts memorized. Oral reports will begin the week of January 11. Please encourage your child to read daily and record the minutes read on their Surf Log. Have a fabulous week.

The purposes of homework are to review material taught at
school, to encourage independence and creativity, and to promote academic
growth and development. Every effort will be make to ensure that the
students are heading home with a clear understanding of what is required
that night. Any child is welcomed and encouraged to seek additional
directions or clarification of any aspect of the homework. When a student
and his/her parents understand the assignments, working successfully at home can become a reality.
While you should not "study" for your child or do his/her homework
assignments, you can provide a helpful home atmosphere which encourages your child to do his/her best. Please feel free to get in touch with me if you
have any questions or concerns regarding your child's homework. I think it
is through this kind of cooperation that homework can become the teaching
and learning tool it has proven to be.
A good spelling curriculum should teach the words students use and
misspell. Our Scott Foresman Everyday Spelling text teaches the words
students at each grade level actually write and misspell most frequently.
High-frequency words from classic word studies make the Everyday Spelling word lists the most developmentally appropriate in a spelling program today. This program teaches the words and strategies today's students need to know.
Understanding numbers begins by sensing the value of each unit. In the
third grade we use a multisensory approach to math. Students will be
learning the importance of sequence counting using touch points to learn the
basic concepts of multiplication and division. The Touch Math program
teaches multiplication and division for the first time. Touch Math sequence
counting provides an easy transition to multiplication. With its built-in
sequential teaching methodology, this guarantees positive learning
experiences from the beginning. This program guides students from single-
digit multiplication facts to multiplying by double-digit multipliers with
regrouping. Finally, the program helps students learn division facts and
gain skills dividing by double-digit divisors, with and without
remainders. The Touch Math Computation Kit provides everything to lead a
student from fundamental to advanced concepts. This powerful program aids students in recognizing concepts in an exciting and interactive approach.
Have a terrific week!
