![]() Performing Arts ElectiveGrade 7 Class Expectations:
Objective: Students will be exposed to and practice music in forms of singing, reading, and listening. Students will use criteria to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of performances and compositions. Students will participate in acting, improvisation and dancing. Students will learn about historical influences on music and theatre. Students will identify and describe the development of music during medieval and early modern times in various cultures (e.g., African, Chinese, European, Islamic, Japanese, South American). Students will design and create masks, puppets, props, costumes, or sets in a selected theatrical style drawn from world cultures, such as Javanese shadow puppets or Kabuki masks. Students will compare and contrast various theatre styles throughout history, such as those of Ancient Greece, Elizabethan theatre, Kabuki theatre, Kathakali dance theatre, and commedia dell'arte. Students will use improvisation in rehearsal to discover character and motivation. Students will demonstrate projection, vocal variety, diction, gesture, and confidence in an oral presentation. Students will perform character-based improvisations, pantomimes, or monologues, using voice, blocking, and gesture to enhance meaning.

Grade 8 Class Expectations:

Students will describe the ways in which American history has been reflected in theatre (e.g., the ways in which the Industrial Revolution and slavery were portrayed in the minstrel show, the melodrama, and the musical). Students will research a famous playwright or musical composer and present it to the class. Students will use improvisation in rehearsal to discover character and motivation. Students will demonstrate projection, vocal variety, diction, gesture, and confidence in an oral presentation. Students will perform character-based improvisations, pantomimes, or monologues, using voice, blocking, and gesture to enhance meaning. Students will critique a performance and write a review focusing on the areas of set design, costume, music, and acting. Students will show knowledge of jobs in the areas of music and theatre.
