7th or 8th Grade SCIENCE BOOK REPORT REQUIREMENTS:

You will choose a book from one of the following categories. You will need
to have your parents and science teacher approve the book before you start
reading. You will be required to have a small 4¨x 5¨ lined, spiral
notebook to take notes in while you read (THIS IS OPTIONAL FOR AN EXTRA
CREDIT BOOKREPORT). You need to choose a book that is
age appropriate, but that challenges you to improve your reading
comprehension.

CATEGORIES:

1. SCIENCE FICTION - This type of novel can be any futuristic setting
with science and or technology emphasized throughout the book. The book
should help you learn about science concepts in a creative setting. You may
not choose a book that has been made into a movie except with special
permission and instructions from your teacher. No pure fantasy-type novels
(wizards, dragons and magic) will be allowed, as they do not have a
sufficient amount of science to write a good book report.

2. NON-FICTION SCIENCE BOOK: This type of book can be about any
science topic that you enjoy or one that has relevance to our 8th grade
science curriculum. It is not a novel, but a factual book with
scientifically valid information. You may choose a book that has
illustrations, but it cannot be a children's book or an Eyewitness type of
book with short captions and many pictures.

3. SCIENCE OR MATH BIOGRAPHY - You may read a book about a famous
scientist or mathematician. You will be asked to describe the person's
life and contributions to science or mathematics.

4. MEDICAL/SCIENCE MYSTERY OR NON-FICTION MEDICAL BOOK (8th Grade only)-
This category could include non-fiction books such as Hot Zone, or any of the
books by Robin Cook. The book should have sufficient medical or scientific
information to complete the book report. Be sure to take notes on the
medical information and vocabulary.

REQUIREMENTS:

1. The book you choose must have from 200 pages(7th) or 250 to 300 page
(8th). A book with more than 300 pages earns extra credit points. You may
read a book with fewer pages only with teacher permission.
2. You will need to fill out a Book Approval Form and have
a parent signature giving you permission to read the book.
3. You may not re-read a book previously read. This must be an
absolutely new book that you have not read before.
4. You will take notes while reading to aide you in writing your
report. Be sure to put page numbers in your notes and underline or
highlight vocabulary words. You will be required to have a small notebook
to take notes in and you must bring the notebook and the book to school the
day of the book report. Your grade will be reduced if you do not have your
notes with you at the time you are writing the report. Highlighting your
book (if you own it) is recommended but is not required.

showing its many properties and uses.

 Read a non-fiction book on Chemistry and do a report on it.

 Write a poem about atoms, elements, reactions or the Periodic Table of
Elements. Make sure it uses scientific vocabulary.

 Do a chemistry experiment for the class that demonstrates chemical
reactions.

 Do any of the Chemistry Chapter Projects on the first page of each chapter
from Ch. 2-8.

 Make a poster that illustrates the pH Scale of Acids and Bases. Include
common substances that have that pH number.

 Write a paper on one or more radioactive elements and explain in detail
the characteristics of radioactive isotopes and how they are used in science
and medicine.

 Write a paper on polymers and give examples of formulas and applications.

 Write a paper on a famous chemist from the list below or go to
http://www.liv.ac.uk/Chemistry/Links/refbiog.html to see a big list of all
the famous chemists. Famous Chemists: Max Planck, *Marie Curie, Neils Bohr,

* Be sure to check with Mrs. Brooks before beginning a project, students who
have several missing homework assignments will not get points for extra
credit work UNTIL ALL THE MISSING WORK IS MADE-UP IN AN ACCEPTABLE MANNER!
All extra credit reports must be submitted to Turn-it-in.com and have less
than 15% copied text material. A Noodletools bibliography will also be
required.

7TH GRADE BIOLOGY EXTRA CREDIT IDEAS:
EXTRA CREDIT / HONORS OPPORTUNITIES FOR CELLS AND GENETICS

You may do one or two of the following activities or projects with your
teacher’s permission. All reports must be accompanied by a proper
bibliography and be free of any plagiarism, and submitted to Turn-It-In.com.

1. Write a report on general cell information, including cell organelles,
cell reproduction and cell functions.
2. Write a report on DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid), include the history of its
discovery, its chemical make-up, and the part it plays in heredity.
3. Write a comparative analysis of active transport, osmosis and diffusion
describing the role each in the proper functioning of the cell.
4. Write a report on Mitosis and Meiosis describing how these processes lead
to the reproduction of cells and offspring.
5. Write a report on RNA, DNA and Protein Synthesis.
6. Write a report on the history of the microscope and its significance in
scientific discoveries in cytology (pretty exciting stuff…!) Diagrams or
timelines could be added to this project.
7. Make a 3-D model of a plant and/or animal cell or DNA molecule.
8. Write and perform a play that demonstrates mitosis.
9. Make a poster of the various types of cells in the human body. Be sure to
have captions that describe the function of each.
10. Write a rap song about cells or other biology topic that could be
performed in class. (remember to only use appropriate language, and include
lots of good science info.)
11. Draw a large cell poster that shows all the organelles of a plant and/or
animal cell, accompanied by an explanatory caption for each.
12. Research and write a report on either bacteria or viruses which includes
illustrations. Information on diseases, antibiotics and immunization should
be included.
13. Read a non-fiction or fictional book (from the recommended list) that
deals with biology, medical or health issues. Write a book report.
14. Do a family genetics chart showing three generations of your family and
all the genotypes and phenotypes exhibited by your relatives.
15. Produce a Power Point presentation on any of the above topics to be shown
to the class during an oral lecture.
16. Research a genetic disease and write a report on the disease and its
treatments.

that can be found in the textbook in Chapters 3-6, and you present the lab to
the class as a demo if you would like.
18. Draw and label a poster that describes Gregor Mendal's experiments with
pea plants. Include P, F1, and F2 generations with the various traits
illustrated.
19. Come up with your own creative idea and present it to your teacher for
