The S.W.R.L. Program is a "Home Reading Program". It is very important that the children read their books to you and answer the comprehension questions that are listed on the last page. These questions are the beginning steps of the skill of understanding and interpreting what they read. You print the book and your child studies it until you feel he/she has mastered the words. Mastery means that your child can read through the entire book fluently with few mistakes. Then, your child returns the book to class and you print the next book in the series. Each child is working at their own pace as they progress.
There are 52 books in this series with a vocabulary of 102 words. You may want to make flash cards to help your child become familiar with them and recognize them readily. They may also be used in simple sentences, matching games, word bingo games, etc. Help your child find these words in their story books, magazines and newspapers so that they will become aware that reading is important and THEIR words are everywhere, not just in school books. We also have been learning about sentences and questions beginning with capital letters and ending with periods and question marks. When they create sentences for you with their words, help them with this concept too.
We hope you will enjoy working with your child in this exciting new experience.
