STAR Tests and Accelerated Reader

Preliminary STAR tests will be administered to students who demonstrate a reading vocabulary of 100 or more words. The STAR test is designed to help find the reading
level that students will most likely be successful. With STAR reading I am able to assess
students' reading levels, receive accurate, reliable, norm-referenced reading scores including
grade equivalents, percentile ranks and more. STAR also allows me to determine the appropriate
level of challenge for each student to personalize practice and individualize instruction. The
best thing about STAR is that it tracks the growth in students' reading achievement.

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computer program that helps teachers manage and monitor children's
independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his/her own level and reads it at
their own pace. When finished your child takes a short quiz on our computer at school (passing
the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read). AR then gives both
children and teachers feedback based on quiz results. Teachers will help your child choose
books at an appropriate reading level using the STAR testing program. Every book that has an AR
Reading Practice Quiz is given a point value. AR points are computed based on the difficulty of
the book. You may find the reading level and points of many books by visiting the AR BookFinder
at www.arbookfind.com. Students can earn prizes in class for accumulating 10 points.

In order to have an efficient and easily accessible AR program, I need parent volunteers to help
catalog our classroom library books.
