About The Teacher

I have taught 7th Grade Science at Redwood Middle School for twelve
years. I previously taught in Burbank and Pasadena. Before teaching
middle school and high school I conducted research in genetics and
neuroscience (primarily using fruit flies) and taught genetics and cell
biology to college students.

I became interested in science from my experiences outdoors, hiking
and camping in the mountains, playing in the dirt in my backyard, and
raising a variety of pets. When I was in middle school, my dream was to
be a naturalist like John Muir. I still enjoy playing in the dirt!

In the past few years, as my own children have become independent, I've
started traveling with a volcano study group. Five summers
ago I made a dream-come-true trip to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador! I've
also been to Peru,Indonesia, Turkey, Greece and the Aeolian Islands. My
husband and I have also started canoeing the Wilderness Waterways of the US.
We've spent a week canoeing on the Green River in Utah, a hundred-mile stretch
of the Missouri River in Montana, and,ninety-three miles of the Allagash
Wilderness Waterway in Maine.

Three years ago I went with Mrs. Hinkle (7th grade White)and a group from FoTO
(Friends of Tanzanian Orphans) to Olasiti,Tanzania where the group taught
English, worked with host teachers, orphans and a women's co-op...a
transforming experience! See the work of FoTO at
http://www.tanzanianorphans.org/ :-)

Mission For The Class

We will focus on learning how to investigate as scientists, how to find
answers for important questions and how to recognize when a question cannot
be approached scientifically. You will continue to practice your skills in
analysis, computing and communication. I hope you will develop a
better appreciation for all the living things on Earth.
