Get involved...

You may have heard the saying "Think Globally, Act Locally". This Gallery is dedicated to the organizations that I value and contribute to either through donations, sponsorship or volunteer time. Please take a look, perhaps you'll find one that you'll want to get involved with!

Sponsor an orphan...

Many of you know that Mrs. Hinkle sponsors orphans at the Orphan Center in the Village of Olasiti, Tanzania. This is Christina. I have been her sponsor for several years. She is now in high school with plans to study business when she graduates.

Did you know that $200 sends Christina and other orphans like her to school for an entire year? The cost includes books and a school uniform. Click on the website in the "Links" section or see Mrs. Hinkle for more information.

Every summer Mrs. Hinkle travels to Africa to visit the orphan center at Olasiti. She often takes students and teachers with her to help teach English and just interact with the children.

In June of 2010 I had the opportunity to go with her to visit Christina, my sponsor child. My visit also included a safari. This is one of the pesky monkeys at Tarangire National Park.

Read this book...

Read the book "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind" about a young African boy, William Kamkwamba and how he built a windmill to generate electricity for his home. It is a wonderful story of ingenuity, imagination, and persistence. Click on the Moving Windmills link in the "Links" section to find out more.

Horse Lover?

Every Saturday I volunteer at a small ranch in Monterey which is part of the Redwings Horse Sanctuary. I feed, clean up (lots of that!) and sometimes groom the six horses that live there. Redwings began as a rescue group in England. The name of the group comes from the first animal they rescued, a chicken named "Redwings". The Sanctuary has a larger ranch in Lockwood California with over 100 horses and donkeys living there.

This is Snap, he is the herd leader and is very bossy.

This is Ohlone, one of the horses I take care of. She is waiting to be brushed and wondering why I'm taking so long with the halter. Ohlone is very old and has a damaged right eye, which means she has to wear a fly mask for protection. She was found abandoned and starving in a field.

You can also check out Castleton Ranch Horse Sanctuary in Southern California. (Click on the website in the "Links" section for more info)

Adopt a pet from the ASPCA....

Avoid buying a pet from a pet store. Many of these animals come from puppy mills where the dogs are kept in very bad conditions. Buy your pet from a reliable breeder or better yet adopt!

Sea Turtle League

The Sea Turtle League was previously known as the Caribbean Conservation Corporation. Every year my homeroom raises money to sponsor one of the turtles. This year we raised enough to sponsor Maya. You can learn everything there is to know about sea turtles on this site. You can also track your sea turtle as it migrates. They also have a shop and fantastic eco-travel opportunities. Click on the website in the "Link" section to find out more.

Most importantly, protect open space and habitat.

Click on the website in the "Links" section to visit the websites for the Peninsula Open Space Trust and the Nature Conservancy.

The Peninsula Open Space Trust has saved thousands of acres of open space in the bay area. You can visit all these places too! POST also sponsors nature walks and lectures that you might find interesting.

The Nature Conservancy not only saves open space and habitat but works to restore it as well. Want to work in the field as a scientist? Check out their career section for all the jobs you can do as a scientist for the Conservancy.
