Also Yoga classes at Sierra 2 Center for Arts & Community plus a FREE Vedanta & Gita study class through Chinmaya Mission is held at Kulkarni residence Elk Grove, CA.

1. Indian Music Classes – Raga Academy of Indian Music

Music classes are taught by the Founder & Artistic Director of Raga Academy, Guru Mrs. Heera Kulkarni who hails from the Gwalior Gharana or school of music. She trained at Gandharv Mahavidyalay, Delhi, India with Sangeet Visharad degree. An experienced music teacher who has taught for many years, Heera also holds a Masters degree in Education from California State University, Sacramento, CA. Guru Heera Kulkarni is also an approved artist of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission.

Hindustani classical vocal music, light music (such as bhajans, ghazals, popular songs), harmonium and keyboard classes are offered for children, youth and adults. Classes for children five years and up, teenagers and adults are held once a week for 60 minutes and there are four classes per month. Students are taught in a small class size format where individual attention is given to each student. Private lessons are also available for advanced students. Online classes are offered for students in remote areas.

Students are also trained for Exams in Hindustani vocal music available through affiliation from Gandharv Mahavidyalay, India. Syllabus from Gandharv Mahavidyalay is followed and students can take exams once they finish the yearly study.

Student recitals are held every year with live music. All students are encouraged to participate and showcase their talent. These student recitals are FREE and open to the general public.

Heera is an extremely dedicated teacher who has a knack for teaching students of all ages and she enjoys teaching music tremendously. She believes in imparting the knowledge given by her gurus to her students. She dedicates her energy in passing on our valuable heritage to anyone who wants to devote time to Indian music. Heera  is also a certified multiple subjects teacher and has been teaching in an elementary school in CA for the past 20 years.

Heera started learning music at the age of eight years from her musician mother, Mrs. Shashikala Koranne. She continued her studies with various gurus in Delhi, India learning sitar, harmonium, North Indian classical dance Kathak and vocal music. She has been teaching and performing Indian music for the past many years. In 2008, she published her first CD of geets and ghazals entitled “Shama”. She is currently working on her second CD of devotional music. Heera is also the founder/director of Sangeet Bharati, a non-profit organization which promotes Indian music and culture in the USA.

As an approved artist of Sacramento Metroploitan Arts Commission, Heera has held artist residencies at the Boys & Girls Club and the Pannell Community Center in Sacramento, CA. She has also presented lecture & demonstrations on Music of India at various schools in Sacramento County & Calaveras County, CA. Heera presented a two day cultural program at the Crocker Art Museum in 2012 in conjunction with an exhibition of Nepalese Art on Shiva & Buddha.

Yoga with Yoga + You: Get your yoga mats ready. Yogini Heera invites you to learn techniques of self-healing & being more mindful through controlled breathing, yoga postures, short guided meditation & relaxation. Taught by Heera Kulkarni, Yoga Shiromani, a certified yoga instructor from International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center, India. Every Wednesday at Sierra 2 Center for Community & Arts. 3. FREE Vedanta & Gita Study class is conducted in English by a dynamic teacher – Bharati Sundararajan from Chinmaya Mission, Sacramento. Host: Heera Kulkarni. All adults are welcome to this FREE class. Call (916) 686-5785 for  more info. Fridays at 7:30 pm in Elk Grove.

4. Book Cal Koyals’ Band/Choir Group for Live Indian Music Performance

Vocals: Adults & youth accompanied with percussion and other instruments from India

Devotional music, Classical music, Ghazals, Folk music, Regional music and Popular songs
