About The Teacher

"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats."
                                                        - Albert Schweitzer

I have been teaching high school history classes since 1998, and at Rancho
Buena Vista High School since 2004. During this time, I have taught U.S
History, AP U.S. History, IB History of the Americas, American Government,
and Economics, World History I and World History II. I am thrilled to have
the opportunity to teach “A Socio-Political History of Rock and Roll," a
class I wrote to combine my two passions - music and history. This UC-
approved course examines the social and political upheavals that took place
between 1950-2000 as seen through the lens of the musicians of the time.
There is an emphasis placed on civil rights, social justice, and oral
history, and I am currently working on my Master's degree using this class as
the cornerstone for my thesis.

I am a California native and 4th generation San Franciscan. I attended
schools in Carlsbad and Hawaii, graduated from CSUSM and hold degrees in
Behavioral Science and Social Science. I have been married since 1983 and
have two grown children who were both educated in the Vista Unified School
District.

When I'm not teaching I can be found listening to music, walking on the
beach, bodysurfing, reading books about history and biographies of
musicians, working in my garden, and making pies from my fruit trees.

My heroes are my children, Howard Zinn, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Favorite Quote: "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other
plans." John Lennon

Mission For The Class

My mission for all of the students that I teach is to instill a true love
for learning, and discovering with appreciation the world around them. It
is cliché to say, “the students are the future,” but I truly believe that
they are. It matters that they come to school every day, and it matters
that they come prepared to learn, both physically and mentally. My mission
is to prepare students to be contributing, passionate, caring citizens of
our global society.

"The traveler sees what he sees. The tourist sees what he has come to see."
~G.K. Chesterton
