Math Skills Tested Semester 1
Text book Chapters 1-6
Know your multiplication facts well!
Work on daily at home, to increase speed & accuracy.
Number Sense / Algebra: Chapter 1
- Identify prime and composite numbers
- Factor a number to prime number only (create a factor tree to find the prime factorization)
- Identify a correct factor tree for a given target number
- Identify an exponent and find its value
- Convert an exponential number to a standard value
- Use Order of Operations (PEMDAS) to correctly solve an equation with multiply operations & variables
- Evaluate (solve) an equation with a single variable (if x is , then)
- Write a simple equation (including a variable) to match steps in a simple word problem
- Identify the rule for a function table and use it to find missing amounts in the table
- Use Distributive Property 5 x 28 = (5 x 20) + (5 x 8)
Data, Statistics, & Graphing: Chapter 2
FRACTIONS Ch 4
· Identify prime numbers, know how to find common factors
· Locate, identify, and graph simple, improper fractions, & mixed numbers on a NUMBER LINE
· Create equivalent fractions using common factors to find simplest form
· Identify equivalent fractions i.e. ½ =?/6 or ¼ = .75 or .50 = ½
· Change mixed numbers to improper i.e. 2 1/4 = 9/4
· Change improper fractions to mixed numbers i.e. 13/3 = 4 1/3
· Add & subtract like and unlike denominators
Number Sense: (Ch 1, 2, 3, & 4)
- Round numbers: whole and decimal
- Identify value of a digit in different places: billions to thousandths
- Solve word problems with all four operations using whole and fractional numbers, including decimal amounts.
Reasoning (all chapters)
- Match simple equations to a simple word problems using varied operations (+, -, divide, x}
Ch 5 Identify & Add & Subtract LIke & Unlike FRACTIONS
· Locate, identify, and graph simple, improper fractions, & mixed numbers on a NUMBER LINE
· Add & subtract like and unlike denominators
· Add mixed numbers and simplify i.e. 2 ½ + 5 2/5 = ?
· Subtract mixed numbers and simplify i.e. 3 5/6 – 2 3/5 = ?
Ch 6 FRACTIONS
· Multiply & divide fractions & mixed numbers
· Divide simple fractions and simplify to lowest terms
i.e. ½ divided by 1/3 = ½ times 3/1 which equals 3/2..
3/2 is then simplified to 1 ½ , the final answer.
Remember: When dividing fractions, DON’T; instead multiply by the reciprocal
(i.e., the reciprocal of 1/3 is 3/1. You just flip the divisor!)
multiply decimals
divide decimals including decimal into whole number and decimal into decimal
-
· Convert fraction to decimal using division of numerator by denominator
i.e. 2/5 = 2 divided by 5 = .4
· Word Problems (many!) What is one half of 4/5?
