Reading Response LOG CHOICES

Predict:

#1- Think about the title, the illustrations, and what you have read so far. Tell what you think will happen next or what you will learn. Explain any background information you already have and/or evidence from the text to support your predictions.  Change your predictions as needed.

 

Infer:

#2- There are some things writers tell us that they do not say directly. Make an inference about something in the text you read. Give at least one detail as evidence to support your inference.

 

Decode: Using Word Parts or Context:

#3- Look carefully for a unfamiliar word. Record the word, the root and/or the prefix and/or suffix. Determine the meaning of the word using these word parts. Write down the sentence using the word and write down the meaning you figured out.

#4- Find a challenging word in the text. Then, write down the sentence the word is found. Next, underline the word. Now tell what you think the word means based on the context (using the other words in the sentence) of the word.

 

Question:

#5- Write 3-5 questions about important ideas or questions you have about the text in general.

#6- Write 3-5 questions you have for any character in the text. Be specific and ask questions that will help you understand the character a little bit more.

 

Evaluate:

#7- Tell if this text is entertaining, informative or useful. Give reasons why you think so.

#8- Does the author make the characters interesting and believable? Give specific reasons from the text that supports your point.

#9- How are you reacting to the story? What emotions have you felt during reading and why did you feel them. 

#10- Make a generalization based on your recent reading and give specific reasons from the reading that made you think this way.

#11- Make a conclusion based on your recent reading and give specific reasons from the reading that made you make this judgment. 

 

Summarize:

#12- Describe the problem in the story and how the character(s) are dealing with it.

#13- Briefly explain what happened in your most recent reading of the story and why it is important to the overall plot.

#14- Tell about the time and place this story takes place and what it means to the story.

 

Visualization:

#15- Find a passage in the text that gives lots of detail. In your own words, describe everything you see, hear, feel (touch), and feel (emotion).

 

Connections:

#16- Make a connection from the text to one of the following: text to text, text to self, text to world. Give information or details from the text that proves your connections.

 

Author’s Message:

#17- Explain why you think the author has written what you have read. What message is she or he trying to convey to you the reader? Give specific examples from your reading to support your ideas.
