Assignments for May 7-16, 2012
Dear Parents/Guardians.
We began our Age of Exploration unit today and I wanted to give you some information about our planned assignments. This is an eight day unit, covering only chapter 19. Please carefully read the assignment instructions and be certain due dates are clear to your child.
*Today, Monday, through Thursday we will read one section a day from chapter 19. The students should be completing the assigned workbook pages at home as homework. These pages will be graded for accuracy on Friday, May 11th.
*Students received handouts regarding the unit project. I am assuming students will complete the project in class, except for about 10-15 minutes needed to print some pictures. They may work on the project out of class, but will have plenty of time in class if they make good use of their time. If you have any questions about the project after reading the instructions, please email me for clarification.
*Recap:
1.Complete workbook pages 238, 241, 244, and 247. These workbook pages are due Friday, 5/11, when students arrive in class. If they are going on the CJSF fieldtrip Friday, they should turn in their workbook pages on Thursday, or Friday morning before you leave on the trip. No late work.
2. Projects are due when they arrive to class on Wednesday, 5/16. This project should be completed in class, other than the 10-15 minutes they will need to print pictures if theychose not to hand draw their illustrations.
Assignment instructions handed out in class Monday:
The Age of Exploration: Cube and Flip-Book Instructions
Important! Please Read:This project will reflect your knowledge/understanding of the material in this unit. We will not have a test on this unit, but rather what is sometimes called an authentic assessment or a project-based assessment. Be sure to carefully complete this project since it is equivalent to a unit test.Be sure to take another look at the samples of flip-books and cubes that I showed you in class if you are unclear as to how to complete the assignment. They are located at the front of the class.
Directions:Using the instructions on this page, and information from chapter 19 in our textbook, make a flip-book or a cube.
Flip-Book:
1. The top page will be your cover page. Include the title of this unit (The Age of Exploration) and your name(s) and period.
2. The edge of each page, other than the cover page, should have the topic of that page along the bottom edge, such as “”Mercantilism”, “Ferdinand Magellan”, “Advances in Sailing Technology”, etc. Refer to the samples for clarification.
Cube and Flip-Book:
1. Select six different topics from the list I provided and gather information for each topic you chose. Each page of your flip book, or side of your cube, will include the information for one topic.
2. Information required will depend on the topics selected, but generally you will be looking for the who, what where when, and why type information for each topic. Include details on why the person/topic was important/significant.Explain how the person, event, discovery, etc, made a contribution to history, or how the contribution helped people, if relevant, for a given topic. We discussed this in class, at length, but please ask me if you need further clarification.
3. Each page, or side, should include the topic title, the topic information, and an illustration or graphic representative of the topic. The information may be paragraph-formatted, or you may use bullet points. The illustrations may be hand-drawn or may be a pictures found on the internet. Remember, you must complete six topics. Adding a border to each side, or page, is not required, but it really looks nice. Notice the differences in project appearance on the samples with and without borders. Simple lines done with a ruler will add a “finished” look.
4. You may make your cube using construction paper I have in class, or you may use a cardboard box you bring from home. Colored pencils would be helpful in completing this project. You will work on the project in class and will be expected to use your time wisely. It is not required, but you may bring in extra items from home to use on your project.
PLEASE NOTE: PROJECTS ARE DUE WEDNESDAY, MAY 16TH.
