Do we have daily homework?
Yes, in third grade we have daily homework in reading, spelling,
math and sometimes science and social studies. Home work is
assigned from M-Th but not on Fridays. Students need to read for
at least 20 minutes or more every night.
According to Elk Grove Unified School District's guidelines
MINIMUM DAILY AMOUNT OF MINUTES FOR THIRD GRADE LEVEL: Four days a week:45
minutes minimum which includes reading with or to parents, or by themselves.
What do I need to bring to school every day?
First of all you need to bring a positive can-do attitude to
school each day.
A backpack, three sharpened pencils with erasers, a sharpener
that holds shavings and a one inch binder would also be helpful. You also need
to cover your textbooks with a cloth book cover. Please provide four cloth
book covers for this purpose. You need to refer to the supply list page to see
what exactly is needed. Please do not bring toys, games, card games, video
games, MP3 players etc. to school or field trips. Leave these at home.
You may bring board games to school on Board Game Day.
Can I bring a treat to school to celebate my birthday?
Most students bring cupcakes full of sugar and sugary icing plus
soda. This is unhealthy food. Birthdays need to be celebrated at
home with family and friends. If you must bring something please send school
supplies such as pencils, mechanical pencils, erasers, notebooks, etc. These
cost less than cupcakes, are extremely useful to all students and are not
harmful to health.
When is our library day/time?
Our library day is Wednesdays from 9:40-10:00 am.
Bring your library book back to school on Wednesday.
When do we have computers and P.E?
We have computers with Mr. T on Thursdays from 1:05-1:50 p.m.
We do P.E. activities on most of the weekdays for 20 minutes.
On Early Out days there is no P.E. due to computers.
How do we get physical exercise every day at school?
Did you know that an important part of boosting your brain power is by getting
regular physical exercise? Yes, in my class you will be spending at least 20
min. or more each day on physical activities. If the weather is good we will
be walking or running two laps around the track. On some days we will use jump
ropes or balls to get exercise. On other days we may learn yoga or dancing.
How can we earn a pizza party from Mr. Herburger?
Pizza parties are awarded to the class with the best attendance
in the school for that month. Your class can win a pizza party
hosted by Mr. Herburger by coming to school everyday and coming
on time. School starts at 7:55 a.m. which means you need to be
lined up in the quad by 7:50 a.m. In the year 2009-10 we did earn one pizza
party for the best attendance in the school. Year before last we earned two
best attendance pizza parties.
When can parents/guardians visit the classroom?
I have an open door policy. Parents may visit the classroom any time without
making an appointment. However, if you need to discuss your child's progress
with me please make an appointment to meet with me before or after school.
How can parents volunteer in the classroom?
Parents or other family members may volunteer their time in the classroom.
They can come in to make copies, correct papers, help out with projects, read
to/with students, work with students on math, etc. Please email me what days
and times are good for you. Parents can also help out by working at home on
putting together classroom projects, cutting, stapling or correcting papers.
When are progress reports sent home?
Progress reports for each child will be sent home every 4-6 weeks. You can
also make an appointment with me by calling the office at (916)-681-1390, by
emailing me or sending me a note.
