Where is my student's classroom?
Our classroom is Room E-1. The E-wing houses all first grade
classes.
What time does school begin and end?
Our school day starts at 8:10 and ends at 2:25. Every Thursday is
an Early Out Thursday. Dismissal is 1:50.
What happens if my student is running late?
After the 8:10 bell has rung and the gates have been locked, any
student not in the classroom is considered tardy. Tardy students
must pass through the office to collect a pink slip which is given
to the teacher. Tardies are recorded on attendance records and
report cards. I encourage all of my students to have their
backpacks (library books, folders, lunches) and clothes
(including shoes) prepared the night before school so they are
ready to go in the mornings. Tardies can be extremely disruptive
to the flow of a classroom.
What about school absences?
Please keep your student home if s/he has a fever, has vomitted,
or has a skin rash. Any parent can send an email or call in to
inform me of an absence. I am happy to then inform Miss Linda in
the office.
How can I contact Mrs. Yuen?
I arrive about 6:30 every morning and leave some time after 4:00
(or later). I can be reached during those hours at (916) 681-1390.
I am always available by email: myuen@egusd.net.
What should my student bring to school?
Your student needs his/her backpack every day. Your student will
be given a folder on the first day of school and should bring it
every day. The folder will be used to safely transport class work
and all school correspondence to your home. Your student may also
bring a healthy snack to eat during one of his/her recess breaks.
Toys should be left at home.
Can my student bring a water bottle?
Each student may bring his/her own water bottle. I ask that the
water bottle be labeled with the student's name. The student is to
take the water bottle home each day to re-fill it with water. I
cannot allow refilling bottles at school with one sink and 24
students. Please do not send fruit juices, soda, or sports drinks
in the water bottle.
Do I send my student directly to the classroom in the mornings?
No, your student will line up each and every morning in the quad,
near the stage, under the tree. This is the area where all first
graders line up. We walk, as a class, to the classroom about 8:00 to
begin our seatwork.
When are recess breaks?
Your first grader will get three (3) recess breaks in a regular
school day. The first break is 9:30-9:45. You are welcome to pack
a healthy snack. Lunch is from 11:00-11:40. This period usually
includes about 15 minutes of play after lunch. The last recess
break of the day is 1:25-1:35.
What are my student's options for lunch?
Lunch is served from 11:00-11:40. Your student may bring a lunch
from home or may purchase a hot lunch from the cafeteria. The
cost is $2.25. Free and Reduced lunch forms are available from
the office. If you send money to school with your student, please
make certain it is clearly labeled (with student name and
Personal Identification Number "PIN") and securely sealed inside
an envelope.
What is my student's Personal Identification Number
I will provide the PIN shortly before school starts. It is a four-
digit number that your student must know in order to buy a lunch
or particpate in the Accelerated Reader Program. Your student
will input the code every day to purchase his/her school lunch. I
ask that all students learn their numbers before school starts.
What is the Accelerated Reader (AR) Program?
When a first grader has developed enough independent reading
skills and can thoroughly understand what she or her has read, I
will encourage the student to participate in the AR Program. This
program is an excellent means by which to challenge the
accelerated student. Leveled books are read and comprehension
quizzes are taken online as an accountability measure of
understanding. The scores are collected each trimester by
individual students. In order to earn a bronze award, one must
accumulate 2 points (about 5 books); a silver award is 4 points
(about 8 or 9 books); a gold award is 8 points (about 16 or 17
books); and a platinum award is 24 points (over 50 books). In
order to view what AR titles are in our school library, go to my
LINKS section for a link to the Sacramento County Library.
What are the holiday/birthday policies in this classroom?
It is my firm belief that birthdays and other holidays are best
celebrated at home. With this in mind, I ask that you comply with
my policies regarding invitations. Classroom mailboxes may NOT be
used for delivery of invitations unless there is one invitation
for each and every student. If your student does not have an
invitation for each classmate, he or she may pass out invitations
after the school day is over (2:30) at the gate or may hand me
stamped envelopes and an invitation list which I will address and
then drop in the U.S. Mail.
Can my child bring cupcakes or other special treats in for his/her birthday?
My answer is NO. Again, I believe birthdays should be
celebrated at home. Being firm on birthday celebrations keeps
everything fair among ALL classmates, including those who celebrate
birthdays while school is not in session and those who do
not celebrate birthdays as a result of religious beliefs. Your
student is welcome to bring in his/her favorite book to read for
the class on his/her birthday.
How can I help out in the classroom?
I occasionally ask for parent help with chaperoning field trips
or for special projects. You are welcome to observe at any time,
but in terms of actual classroom help, I am fairly self-
sufficient. I encourage all parents to get involved with the
Herburger Parent Faculty Organization.
What is the Parent Faculty Organization?
The Parent Faculty Organization (PFO) is an excellent way for you to
become involved in your student's education at Herburger. The PFO
sponsors the Fall Festival, Mutlicultural Night, and several
family movie nights. The PFO also raises money to support our
school needs (sports teams, sixth grade promotion, field trip
scholarships).
