I began teaching in 1996 at John Reith Elementary and taught 1st, 4th and
then my favoirte 6th grade. When Roy Herburger opened, my friends Mr. and
Mrs. Taoromina began teaching here and encouraged me to transfer, so I did! I
love teaching here and enjoy teaching the 6th grade curriculum.
I love the outdoors, so Mr. Pickard and I enjoy hiking, camping and the
wilderness. I also love sports! I played basketball at the University of
Alaska Anchorage (I am 6'1 3/4" tall). We have two cats, Ernie and Burt and
my husband's daughter, Brittany, attends UAA.
I am excited for the new school year to begin and I can't wait to meet my new
class! We are going to have a great year!
This year we will be learning Math in a whole new way. I am part of a four
year Math grant called Making Math Matter M3(as is our whole 6th grade team).
I attended a week long seminar on new strategies that are used by the highest
performing schools in the world and have been proven to work with kids here
in California! So this year's 6th graders will learn the most
amazing methods in which to figure out multiple ways to solve a math problem!
They will love the easy ways to show their work and parents will be
amazed by their huge improvements!
We are very fortunate that our district chose this program to be implemented
in our district!
Math will be super fun this year because of this and my goal is to help my
students become superstar math kids!!
For Reading, Writing, Social Studies and Science we have such interesting
curriculum and I hope the class enjoys it as much as I do. We will be
creating wonderful art projects that relate to their studies and developing
their skills in all of these areas so that they are fully prepared to attend
middle school the following year!
Organization is the key! I make it very clear that organization, preparation,
and a positive attitude are the keys to a successful year. We learn about the
5 C's, 1. Confidence 2. Courage 3. Character 4. Conviction 5. Commitment. The
5 C's help students build a strong, healthy mind so that they are open to
learning and can grow in their educational years!
Physical Fitness and Nutrition are also a very important part of our
curriculum! We will be developing our strength, endurance and PE skills
weekly through exercing and nutrition courses. I also teach a program called
SHAPE (Shaping Health as Partners in Education) which is a program that
teaches the children about fruits and vegetables. They will get a chance to
try fruits and vegetables each month! So, it is very important that they
bring healthy snacks and water with them to school. Sodas and candy are not
allowed. Mrs. Davis prefers the kids do not bring Hot Cheetos to school
either because the kids hands are stained with the orange dye and it stains
our books and supplies, plus it is not considered a healthy snack.
Looking forward to a wonderful year,
Mrs. Pickard
