Thank you for coming to Parent Orientation. The following is a basic outline of
procedures and policies that will be discussed.
GRADES
Grades are given on a percentage
scale. I use the same percentages
that are on the report card.

A- 94%-90% |
B+ 89%-87% |
| B 86%-83% |

D+ 69%-67% |
| D 66%-63% |
D- 62%-60% |
F 59% & Below |
For homework and
ungraded assignments, children earn anywhere between a 3 and a 0. 3 means that the child appears to
understand and has completed the assignment. 2 means that the child appears to have partial understanding
and/or may not have completed the assignment, or that the assignment was turned
in late. 1 means that the child
does not appear to understand but did turn in something. 0 means that the child failed to turn
in anything for the assignment.
I typically have
a large number of graded assignments, tests, and quizzes each quarter. I do this so that the final report card
grade is not overly affected by a bad day or two.
TESTS & QUIZZES
Students typically are told about
quizzes and tests a week ahead of time.
The planning of these tests and quizzes depends upon the needs of the
students and the lessons, but the following is to give you an idea of the
typical timetable. There are spelling
tests every week. Religion quizzes
are usually weekly to every week and a half; a religion test is at the end the Ten Commandments
section. Reading quizzes are
approximately every week and a half (after the stories listed in the workbook),
and there are reading tests at the end of the units. Other tests typically are at 2 to 2 1/2 week intervals. Except for spelling tests, tests and
quizzes do not go home. Students
will take test/quiz results/scantrons home to be signed by a parent and then
returned to class. Tests and quizzes are kept on file, and parents are welcome
to make an appointment to come in to review them.
As far as grades are concerned, tests are weighted twice as
much as regular assignments.
Quizzes count the same amount as regular assignments. The exception to this is spelling
tests, which count the same amount as regular spelling assignments.
HOMEWORK
There will be approximately an
hour's worth of homework each night, Monday through Thursday. The children are expected to be
responsible about writing down all of their homework each night. Doing this themselves helps them to
become more organized and responsible.
Each of the children has a homework chart. I stamp the chart if the student has written all of the
homework from the night before, has his/her assignment book signed, and has all
of his/her homework. Students must
be in class when I check the assignment books in order to receive a stamp for
the previous night’s homework.
After the student has earned twenty stamps indicating having done what was
required twenty times, then he/she can redeem the filled stamp chart for one
night of no spelling homework.
(All other homework must be completed on that night.)
Please let me
know is your child consistently takes longer than an hour on homework.
SIGNING THE ASSIGNMENT BOOK
PLEASE make
sure to sign the assignment book by that night's homework every night. The assignment book is a good way for
you to keep track of what your child is doing in class. I will also sometimes write notes to
parents in the assignment book, and I want to be sure any notes are read. I will sometimes staple important
papers into the assignment book.
Also, although it is the child’s responsibility to complete homework and
study for tests/quizzes, it is very important for parents to be aware of when
assignments are due and when tests or quizzes are coming up. As noted earlier, students are
typically given one week's notice before tests or quizzes. Anticipate having a spelling test at
the end of every week and a religion quiz at some point during most weeks.
PAPER HEADINGS
Please note the sample heading at the top of this page.
DISCIPLINE
Please refer to the school's Responsibility Training information.
MASS TIMES/CLASS MASS/ RETREAT
School Masses are on most Fridays at 9:30 A.M. We have a
retreat at the Heart of Jesus Retreat Center scheduled on Thursday, February 25,
2010. We have a class Mass scheduled at the retreat.
CLASSROOM LIBRARY BOOKS
Students are welcome to check out classroom library books, but just as with the school library, they are responsible for
any books they check out of the library.
They may check out a book for two weeks, and they may be renewed. It is their responsibility to care for
the books they check out until they are returned. Students are required to always have a silent reading
book. They may not always be able
to go to the library when they wish to, so they should bring a book from home
if they are uncertain whether or not they will have a book available at school.
FOOD and BIRTHDAYS
Our Room Mothers, Mrs.
Poe and Mrs. Smith, will be coordinating all birthday celebrations. Birthdays will be celebrated on the
birthday dress day only. This is
to make sure that all of the children have their birthdays celebrated by their
classmates, help working parents who may not be able to bring in treats on
their child’s birthday, and avoid excessive amounts of food being brought into
the classroom. Please work with
Mrs. Poe and Mrs. Smith to make this a success.
Please see the additional handout
regarding food allergies.
4TH GRADE HOT LUNCH
Our dates
are April 15 and April 23. Please let Mrs. Poe and Mrs. Smith know if you can help.
STUDENT OF THE WEEK
Each child will have a week as Student of the Week. We will remember
each Student of the Week and his/her family in our prayers during that
week. This week the “Student of
the Week” Board actually has information about me, the teacher. You are welcome to look at it when you
are able.
