Are students able to turn in their book reports before the due date?
I am fine with students turning in their book reports earlier
during the week
that they are due. They shouldn't be turned in before that week,
though.
Tell me how the final report card grades are determined.
The final report card grade is determined from the individual
scores on
assignments, tests, quizzes, activities, etc. The final grade is
100% of the
recorded work. That 100% is broken down into categories. Below
is the
breakdown of the reading grade.
Reading Grade
70% is assignments, tests, and quizzes.
15% is oral reading.
7% is participation and effort.
6% is homework and other assignments.
2% is Accelerated Reader Regular Tests.
Please tell me about the Student of the Week board.
Your child should bring them in on the first day of his/her
week. He/she
will staple them onto the board himself/herself. They will
remain up on the
board until the next student brings in his/her items. If he/she
is late, then
your child might have the board for more than a week.
Student of the Week:
The students were assigned for the Student of the Week
board. They were
given papers to use as inspiration for sharing about themselves.
Below is the
schedule. The weeks were assigned randomly. The students were
told their
weeks in class.
What is a spelling picture?
A spelling picture involves both art and spelling. The child is
to draw a
picture, color it, and write all of the week's spelling words
around the
picture in order to get full credit. I also ask that the
children number the
words when they write them so that it is easier to be sure they
are all included.
What is a spelling pretest?
A spelling pretest is taken prior to the actual test. It is
usually homework
in spelling on the second to last day of the school week. The
pretest
involves someone who is able to read the spelling words (it
doesn't need to be
an adult) giving a mock spelling test. That person must sign the
pretest to
indicate that he/she gave the test. Then the pretest must be
corrected.
Either the student or the person who gave the pretest may do
this. The number
wrong, or the number correct if prefered, must be written at the
top of the
pretest. Lastly, the student must correctly write each missed
word five times
on the back of the paper. The goal is to help find any words
that are causing
difficulty and to learn their spelling before the actual test.
Why do you Cc e-mails to Ms. DeVaney?
Ms. DeVaney cares a great deal about the students and families of
St. Hedwig.
Because of this, she has asked teachers to Cc e-mails to her as
a way of
staying informed. On occation, an e-mail many not fall into the
category
where I am to Cc Ms. DeVaney, but this is rare.
Can I see my child's tests and quizzes in addition to the results slip?
It is school policy that tests and quizzes do not go home. I
understand that
you would like to see them, and you are very welcome to do so. I
keep them in
the classroom. You are welcome to make an appointment to see
them or stop by
after school when my door is open for a quick look.
What should be done when scantrons are sent home?
Thanks to the generosity of the Parents Association, our school
now has a
scantron machine which is able to be used to correct multiple
choice types of
tests, quizzes, and assignments. This is a valuable asset which
allows almost
immediate
feedback to both the parents and students. Whenever a scantron
goes home, it
means:
1. That test/quiz/assignment was taken using a scantron.
2. The scantrons were scored and returned to the students.
3. The answers were discussed in class.
4. The students took the scantrons home to share with their
parents.
5. The scantrons should be signed by a parent that night. If
no parent is
available due to being out of town, etc., then whoever is the
student's
guardian should sign the scantron that night.
6. The student should return the signed scantron the next
school day.
7. Signed scantrons are kept in the classroom and available
for review in
the classroom with the associated test/quiz/assignment at parent
request
and/or appointment.
This process allows you to have almost immediate feedback on how
your child is
progressing with regards to the material covered on
tests/quizzes/assignments.
Tell me more about Work Habits/Study Skills and the report card indicators.
WORK HABITS/STUDY SKILLS
LEARNING ASSESSMENT INDICATORS WITH SUGGESTIONS:
1. Listen attentively. Encourage your child to listen
attentively during
instruction and directions. This should be encouraged at home as
well. It is
easy to believe it doesnt matter whether or not you listen if
things are
repeated multiple times. Try to encourage your child to listen
the first
time. He/she should not have to ask for directions to be
repeated or ask
redundant questions.
2. Follows directions. Listening isnt all that is
required. There must be
the follow-through. This includes written and oral directions.
3. Works to ability. We all vary in our abilities in
different subjects and
even on different days. Encourage your child to always give
his/her best
efforts towards whatever he/she does.
4. Works cooperatively. Cooperating and working well with
others is vital.
We need to be able to effectively work with both those who are
our friends and
those with whom we do not have much in common.
5. Works independently. Every child needs to be able to
work independently.
No one should need to remind your child to stay on task or not to
disrupt
others. This also means being confident enough to work
independently without
extra adult assistance. Part of working independently means
having the
confidence to follow through on directions without asking
redundant questions.
6. Completes tasks on-time. Assignments should be completed
and turned in;
assignments which are not completed on time can easily be
forgotten. Your
child should not have to be reminded to turn their work in on
time. Part of
completing tasks comes into play when we correct work together in
class.
Correcting work involves more than marking errors; it also
involves writing
the correct answers in red pencil.
7. Uses time efficiently/stays on task. Students should
strive to stay
focused. Losing focus makes it harder to learn and progress, and
it can make
it more difficult for those around him/her.
8. Demonstrates neatness. This means both completing work
which is neat and
keeping his/her work area neat. Part of this is cleaning up
ones area
throughout the day, during transitions, and before going home.
9. Participates in class. Children should be active in the
learning process.
This means raising their hands, offering answers when asked, and
staying
enthusiastic about school activities. Children should listen
attentively but
appropriately seek help if needed.
10. Completes and turns in homework. All of the homework
should be copied
from the board into the assignment book before leaving the
classroom each day.
The work needs to be completed and turned in on time. Some
students fail to
copy the homework correctly, have outside activities which
interfere with
completing homework, leave their completed work at home, or
cant locate their
completed work. Part of completing homework comes into play when
we correct
the homework together in class. Correcting homework involves
more than
marking errors or putting the number wrong on the paper; it also
involves
writing the correct answers in red pencil.
11. Seeks help appropriately. All of the directions should
be carefully
listened to before questions should be asked. If things are
unclear or a
child does not understand material, he/she should seek help
appropriately.
Part of seeking help appropriately is not interrupting when
directions are
being given and not interrupting when another student is being
helped.
Students should be polite while waiting their turn to have their
questions
answered.
12. Studies for tests. Students generally have a weeks
warning before tests
and quizzes. This time allows for more than just last minute
cramming.
Studying should be an on-going process both in the classroom and
at home.
Material that is truly learned should be retained for more than a
day.
Tell me about Student of the Week. When is my child Student of the Week?
All of the students were randomly assigned weeks to be Student of
the Week. During that week, we remember that student and his/her
family and intentions in our prayers. He/She also decorates the
Student of the Week board. Papers which can be used for this
board were passed out to the entire class in September.
Students are indicated using their class number.

What do the colors on the homework board stand for?
Blue=Something to do. If nothing needs to be turned in, then a parent needs
to initial in the assignment book that the item was done.
Black=Something to know. These are items that parents and students should be
aware of; such as the time/day of events.
Red=Something to study for. Tests and quizzes are in red on the board.
Usually there is around a week's notice.
Green=Reminders for particular people. These items are meant for only the
students whose number is indicated. Only those students must write down what
is in green.
