OPEN COURT READING
Reading

We adopted the Open Court Imagine It 2009 series. The children will continue
developing their reading skills. The focus is on reading, fluency, word
recognition, comprehension, interpretation skills, and vocabulary
development. The AR (STAR) program will also be an important part of the
children’s reading development. They will be responsible for reading and
passing a test for each book, with a score of 80% comprehension or higher.

2) SOUND CARDS

We recommend that you purchase a set of sound cards. The students need to
practice them every night. In the beginning, it will be very easy but we
will be adding sounds daily. The child should say:
a)	Picture-say the picture name
b)	Sound-what sound does it make?
c)	Spelling-what are the spellings?

SPELLING

Our Spelling is directly linked with our Open Court Imagine It 2009 series.
The Spelling words will be posted weekly on our class website. Tests will be
administered on Friday. Children will be expected to learn the words and
spell them correctly on the test and in their daily work. Please assist your
child in studying their words each day in a variety of ways, i.e. asking and
letting them tell you the correct spelling.

HANDWRITING
Our Handwriting is also intergrated into our reading. We will practice
correct formation and neatness in our daily routine. We will give you a
packet that will assist you at home on the correct formation.

HOMEWORK
A weekly homework sheet will be sent home at the beginning of each week.
Homework is due the next day unless stated on the sheet. If homework is not
done and turned in when due, it does not get stamped. There is an average of
½ hour of homework every night except Friday. Reading sound cards are to be
drilled nightly.

SCIENCE

Houghton Mifflin – California Science – will be our new series. We will
be covering plants, animals, weather, seasons, and matter. Miss Gomez will
teach both classes.

Houghton Mifflin –History-Social Science: School & Family – will be the new
series. We will be covering such topics as people everywhere, where we live,
the world of work, and good citizens. Each unit includes graphs, charts, map
and globe skills. Mrs. G. will teach both classes.

COMPUTER LAB

Students will all be going to the computer lab with Mrs. Tupas as their
teacher. She will be teaching basic keyboarding and technology skills.

RELIGION

We use the Sadlier We Believe series. We have religion daily. Your child
will usually have Religion homework over the weekends. It is a family page
to do together, sign and return on Monday. We will not go chapter by
chapter, so please check page number on the homework sheet. The Sacramental
Program is now a 2 yr. Preparation for First Reconciliation and First
