Today we completed the Blest Are We, unit 2 review sections; nice work everyone with your board work. Over on the white boards, with the multi colors (yes, I went to RiteAid early today and restocked the pens), we talked about 1&2 Samuel, and briefly on 1&2 Kings. We did a real quick review also on the books leading up to Samuel. We watched a few videos today, primarily focused on Samuel, Saul, David, & Solomon. You should replay these and watch the full lengths when you have time. For readings, we read from Samuel. We are not meeting next week, but you should continue to browse through these books. Enjoy your Thanksgiving Holiday. > Tom

November 15, 2009 November 12, 2009 _ November 4, 2009

At the end of class on Sunday I asked if you are "getting it" and many replied yes. We had a few volunteers again who got up and presented a few thoughts on significant events. I believe many of you are feeling somewhat comfortable with our bible time line and stories and I too think you are getting it, and doing well.

Sunday we spent a little time discussing literary forms in the Bible. We talked about myths, legends, debates, fiction, songs, parables and letters, and we went over some examples where each are found in the bible. We talked about the writers and audiences of the writers. This will be a reoccurring theme, especially when we talk about prophets, and then later in the Gospels. By the way, I was pleased to see that most everyone recognized Mathew, Mark, Luke & John. Some were quick to recognize Paul, when we referred to "letters".

Remember, these are just some hints to keep in the back of your mind, to help when you are reading. For example, when you read "...lived to 198 years old", you should be thinking virtuous, legendary, important. It may sound like exaggeration, but think of it as means to help you "the audiance" in understanding something important is going on. We talked briefly about Jonah "the whale story" and how fiction is used to teach people about kindness. Ok, here are this weeks homework videos for you to watch:

Just a reminder to all, we set our clocks back this weekend. Yes that means we get an hour back. For one day, there are 25 hours instead of 24. Wow, what to do with the extra hour? How about watching some bible movie trailers and cartoons. How about continuing to thumb through the bible books. This Sunday we will continue to do our review of the first part of the bible. We will work on some time lines of important events. Here are some cartoon and movie shorts for you to watch.

Today was a top ten day.....everyone contributed to listing ten or more passages from the first six books in the bible: Genesis-Exodus-Leviticus-Numbers-Deuteronomy-Joshua.We did a quick topic association where you were able to name the bible book where a particular story came from. The on-line quizes went fairly quickly and we will cover more of these topics during our Unit review next week. We had a few really good readers who led us through chapters 3 & 4 of Blest are We and I hope we have many more volunteers from week to week.

As noted, next week we will do our Unit Review from Blest are We. When you come in to the class, I will have most of the questions posted on the boards, and just as before, you can team up and grab the chalk and pens. You have done this before. The questions are at the end of the chapters and you will look up the answers. We will also review Bible maps, and spend a fair amount of time going over time lines of the bible events we have covered so far.

It may seem that we are moving quickly and you are correct. Don't worry if you think you are behind. It will start to come together soon and you will be telling your own Bible stories and narrations.

If you have time, you should watch a few movie trailers, such as The Ten Commandments, and Joseph King of Dreams.

Hello All!

Wow, we were very busy on Sunday. What a great class.

So for a quick re-cap, we broke up into groups and worked on the "W's" for Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy; (who, what, where, when, why). As I mentioned in class, we will do more of this later for the other books and as you found on Sunday, most of the answers on the title pages of each book. You guys worked very well together. We will have lots of board work this year, doing time lines, unit reviews, etc.

After our board work, we read from Blest Are We chapters 1 & 2 and briefly in the book of Exodus. I am very pleased that so many of you volunteered to read in class. This is a good opportunity to practice your reading in a group. Later on in the year, you will be doing oral presentations of your work. I expect everyone will be ready and will do fine. We were supposed to do the on-line games but the web site was not working. We will do these next time. Here is the link if you want to try at home: On line Quiz.

The next time we meet we will be continuing with Blest Are We chapters 3&4 and doing more board work. I will call it a Top Ten day, because you are going to list your favorite 10 stories (verses) from each of the books we have read so far. For example, you will probably list something from Creation, Noah's Arc, Abraham & Sarah, Joseph, Egypt, Red Sea, and others. We will be in groups again, writing your work on the white boards. If you prefer, you can write these down at home and bring your list to share.

We will also talk about the number 40, as it relates to the Bible. As you are reading over your Bible chapters, when you see numbers like 40, 7, 3 and others, keep in mind these are significant and the number references should help you remember key events. There are numerous interpretations but for our class we will use (40=challenge, period of test; 7=perfect; 3=important event or occurrences.)

We will cover these in class. As I said earlier, we are not doing memorization, you are learning how to build your knowledge base and train your brain to link and remember. The numbers should help you remember. Put a picture in your mind of something familiar and it may help with building your Bible Memory.

We have a day off next Sunday. Some asked if this counts against your maximum of three days absence for the year. No, dont worry. But please keep in mind that you should attend Every scheduled class. In the Bible, the number 7 is sometimes referred to as representing "perfect", so your attendace should be a "7". We cover a lot of material each Sunday and I dont want you to get behind. Coming every Sunday is best, but you should not miss more than 3.

Keep up your reading at home. This week you are still reading Genesis and Exodus. If you want a break from the reading and would like to listen, you can try some on line sites that have audio ready to go. The versions are different from our class Bible, but similar enough so you wont get lost. You can listen and follow along in your class Bible if you want. Here are a couple links:

.

This one also links to audio, but first you click on the Google Earth link. Then, zoom into the middle east and click on one of the green spots. A list of Bible links will show up. Click again and the Bible reference will appear. You can type in your own book, like Genesis 37, and click Listen.

Have a great week.

Tom

Welcome to 6th grade CFF at Saint Ignatius Parish. I enjoyed meeting everyone and our first day went great.

We spent a little time going over our class web site, viewing the class schedule, movie links, links to games on Blest Are We, and much more. Our web page that says 2009 Class Calendar & Topics 2009 gives you a good idea of what we do in class and what you are reading at home. Please remember, you can always check to see next weeks readings, so if you want to review at home in advance you can do so. We will practice reading out loud every Sunday, mostly from Blest Are We, Hear and Believe pages.

The 2009 Reading Outline shows the In-class and Home Reading. This week you are reading Genesis in your Bible at home. Today we did some practice reading from Genesis and discovered words such as "sea monsters", "eden", "500 years old", etc. We briefly talked about interpreting these kinds of words. We talked about "whats inside the bible" and everyone should be pretty good at finding books, chapters and verses; we practiced this quite a bit.

Remember, we are not reading every verse, but you should read a little at the beginning and the end of each chapter. The titles and paragraph headings are good to find familiar stories. If you find something you like, go ahead and spend some time reading. If not, then just move on. Keep in mind, that you are getting familiar with "whats inside Genesis ". We will do much more practice reading from the Bible so everyone gets familiar with finding their way. If you prefer to see the Bible on the Web, click here: Bible on Web.

Everyone received a Bible and a Blest Are We textbook. Please bring these to class each week.Next week we will read from the Hear and Believe pages in Blest Are We and do an on-line chapter quiz. We will also read briefly from another book, titled, "A Child's Bible" by Anne Edwards. We have copies that we will share in class, but if you prefer to have your own, you can purchase one on line. There are many copies available new and used at Amazon and many other sellers. Just Google the title and author.

I look forward to seeing everyone again next Sunday.

Sincerely,

Tom
