SEMINAR AP-PERIOD 4

Welcome to a new school year!  I am happy to have each one of you in class.  

Week One
Monday, 9/7:
Tuesday, 9/8:  Intro. to the course.  Letter of Intro. due on FRIDAY (must by
typed).  Get your IJ ASAP.
Wednesday, 9/9:  Syllabus handed out today.  Get orange paper signed by your
parent.  HAVE YOUR INTO THE WILD BOOK IN CLASS ON FRIDAY FOR SOCRATIC SEMINAR.
Thursday, 9/9:  Small group presentations for IW.
Friday, 9/10:  Write a personal reaction to IW book. Do this in your IJ.

Week Two
Monday, 9/14:  Into the Wild Essay is due on TH.  Email Ms. Ward for the
handout if you need it.
Tuesday, 9/15:  Bring memoir work from summer and memoir book to class!  You
will need it through Friday.
Wednesday, 9/16:  Memoir presentations
Thursday, 9/17:  Into Wild essay due.  Memoir presentations cont.
Friday, 9/18:  Finish presentations.  The Grammar Project-begin planning!

Week Three
Monday, 9/15:  Work on grammar project!  We begin on October 1st.
Tuesday, 9/16:  AP Nuts and Bolts exploring the 2009 prompt for q3.  Write a
thesis in your IJ, and one argument.
Wednesday, 9/17:  Intro to Rhetoric (handout-What is Rhetoric?).  Notes in class.
Thursday, 9/18-  First TIMED WRITING (not for a grade but for a score on the
AP rubric).  
Friday, 9/19-  Continue Intro. to Rhetoric.  HW:  Notes for "The Ugly Truth
about Beauty" and your PRECIS (only four sentences).

Week Four
Grammar Projects begin this week!  We will start on Thursday and go in
numerical order.  If you are reading this, email Ms. Ward and you will get +5
on your grammar project total score.
Monday, 9/28:  Ward had to go to the doctor unexpectedly.  Good news-the
hearing loss is temporary!
Tuesday, 9/29: Make sure you have your grammar project ready!
Wednesday, 9/30: The Rhetorical Precis-write one for Fly the Partisan Skies. 
Due tomorrow!
Thursday, 10/1:  Grammar projects begin!  Also, hand in precis.  Begin The
Whiskey Speech.  All the Pretty Horses take home test.  Due Monday.  You may
use ONLY your book.  :)
Friday, 10/2:  The Whiskey Speech!  Read, analyze, imitate!

Week Five
Grammar Projects continue!
Monday, 10/5:  Pretty Horses test due.  Bring your book with you this week! 
The Whiskey Speech Imitation Writing.  Due on Thursday.
Tuesday, 10/6:  
Wednesday, 10/7:  Precis #1 returned today.  Begin small group Pretty Ponies
discussion topic.
Thursday, 10/8: Grammar projects continue tomorrow.
Friday, 10/9:  Get out your Norton Reader!  Read Once More to the Lake and do
#1 and #2 in your IJ.  Bring on Monday!

Week Six:  Test on Thursday:  abstract-apostrophe
Monday, 10/12:  Analysis of Once More...for homework finish your assigned
group's question.  Take notes and bring tomorrow.  Thursday we will finish
Pretty Ponies.
Tuesday, 10/13:  Review your notes; groups present; finish reading or taking
notes.  Grammar projects conclude.
Wednesday, 10/14:  PSAT.  See you tomorrow.  Start studying your grammar
notes.  Make sure your Under the Influence work is done.
Thursday, 10/15:  Quiz then AP Nuts and Bolts.  You will get your first timed
writing back and score an essay for the same topic. 
Friday, 10/16:  For homework finish Under the Influence and do #1 and #2 in
IJ.  Due on Monday.  Next 12 terms quiz next WED.

Week Seven:  Test Wednesday:  next 12 terms!
Monday, 10/19:  For Under the Influence (answer in IJ)
1.  What is the overall effect of the figurative language on the author's purpose?
2.  Why does the author include the paragraph on the synonyms for "drunk"?
3.  What organizational patterns do you see at work in the piece and why?
4.  Discuss the significance and effectiveness of the title.
5.  Write a precis for the piece.  Do so in your IJ.
Tuesday, 10/20:  Study terms and finish On Dumpster Diving.  For WED:  On
Dumpster Diving and #1,2
Wednesday, 10/21:  Terms quiz #2 today.  Finish On Dumpster Diving for
discussion tomorrow.
Thursday, 10/22:
Friday, 10/23:  No homework.  Check grades on SUNDAY.

Week EIGHT:  New grading period!

Monday, 10/26:  
Tuesday, 10/27:  Nuts and Bolts
Wednesday, 10/28:  Terms quiz #3
Thursday, 10/29:  Study for grammar test.  Read The Way to Rainy Mountain and
do 1,2 in IJ.
Friday, 10/30:  Grammar test now on MONDAY for all classes.  Happy Halloween.


Week NINE:  Finish reading all essays in Norty.  Terms Quiz.  Grammar Test! 
AND...on FRIDAY you will write an essay-TIMED WRITING-Rhetorical Analysis for
a grade...Woo hoo!

Monday, 11/2:  Welcome November!  Today is the grammar test-good luck!
Tuesday, 11/3:  Green packet:  2009 Rhetorical Analysis prompt to analyze in
groups; scoring session.  Tomorrow:  terms quiz (example-hubris) and On Being
a Cripple (plus 1,2, in IJ).  For Thursday:  Coming Home Again plus 1,2, in
IJ.Wednesday, 11/4:  Terms Quiz and quiz on Cripple essay.  Tomorrow:  Coming
Home Again.
Thursday, 11/5:  Organization and structure for Coming Home Again-partner
activity.  Tomorrow, bring your piece!
Friday, 11/6:  TIMED WRITING TODAY!  WOO HOO!  YES, IT COUNTS IN YOUR GRADE!  
Homework:  View the powerpoint for writing the essay.  Click on AP HANDOUTS! 
Take notes on what you need to remember! Monday-you will need to come with
your text highlighted and annotated, as well as have your Introduction and
Body Paragraph on a separate sheet of paper (not in your IJ).
Monday....we will move on to the BODY of the essay.
