How do I know my child is reading at his/her appropriate reading level?

When your child selects a book, have her read the first page. If she
makes more than 5 errors in one page, it is too difficult. If there are no
errors made on one page, the book is probably too easy. If your child
makes no more than 2 mistakes on one page, that is probably just right, BUT...
before deciding that this is the right book, ask the child to read the first page to you and then
summarize what he or she has just read. If the understanding is there, it's a great choice. If not, try
this process with a different book until you get both results: comfortable decoding AND good
comprehension.

How do I get my child to do his/her homework without tears?

First, have a specific place set up for you child to routinely do
Homework. Have materials organized and ready to go: sharp pencils,
erasers, decodable box, etc. After a short rest and snack after school,
set the timer for 10 minutes. Explain to your child to complete as much
as possible in 10 minutes. When the timer goes off, have a 2 minute
stretch break. Reset the timer for another 20 minutes. Reward your child
with an incentive decided ahead of time...(a walk together, read together
play a game together, or something else you've agreed to beforehand).
After HW is done, choose a time before or after dinner when you can
read together for 20 minutes. Remember to log this on the Reading
Log!
