Does my child need to bring their library book to school each day?

Yes. Students are asked to read their library book during class time. They
may take their Accelerated Reader (AR) test on their book when they feel
that they are ready. Our library day is every Thursday, although they may
check out another book as soon as they take the AR test.

Does my child get a grade on his/her report card for the AR tests?

No. First Grade students practice reading books and taking AR tests to
prepare them for Second Grade. This is an enjoyable experience for students
to develop a love of reading!

What is the monthly Read-Aloud form?

Parents write the name of the book that they read aloud to their child each
day. Completed forms are due at the beginning of the next month. These forms
count towards the homework grade.

When is the spelling test?

The spelling test is every Friday. Students are given a list of words every
Monday. During the week, students do activities with those words. They write
each word 5 times each, write each word in a sentence, and write the list of
words in alphabetical order. During P.E., Mrs. Handy incorporates the
spelling words into her activities also.
