the Class of
2012
We are scheduled to attend Caritas Creek Environmental
Education Camp in October 17 - 21, 2011.
I am
looking forward to a fabulous year with your children in Eighth Grade! We will have many exciting things look forward to next school year!
Caritas Creek is soon around
the corner!
The
cost per student is $405, provided we have parent chaperones to staff the
cabins.
The first payment of $55 is
due September 15. Future payments of $70 for the following 5 months will be due
by the 15th of each month.
Please send in payment in the form of a check through the classroom, as
Mrs. Fontana and I will be keeping track of the accounts. Checks should be made out to “St.
Joseph School.”
Caritas Creek Environmental
Education program is located at CYO Camp in
Occidental. Catholic Charities CYO
leases a license from Caritas Creek to operate its programs at the site.
The Archdiocese of San Francisco
requires that each school provide
2 adult chaperones (minimum
age is 18 years old) for each cabin of 10 students. It is the responsibility of each school to provide this
cabin supervision. Schools will not be
charged for cabin chaperones to
attend camp. If the school is unable to provide chaperones, the school will be
charged for Caritas staff coverage at night.
This year we need the following
ratio of chaperones:
We need 3 females and 3 males who are mature, responsible, healthy, and physically fit.
Minimum Age requirement: 18 years old by August
2011
Responsibilities: To sleep (supervise) in the cabins with the kids
To take an active
leadership role in working with a small
hiking group and the teacher naturalist
Participate in
serendipities with cabin group before bedtime
Eat meals with cabin
groups
Requirements: ___Must be fingerprinted (Livescan)
___Provide a current documented
TB test and tetanus shot
(photocopy)
___Current photo ID driver's
license (photocopy)
___Have taken the Shield the
Vulnerable (Safe Environment) course online or on
designated training days and provide a copy of the certificate.
There is an $8 fee for
the on-line course.
The next scheduled
training is September 7, 2011, at
7:00 PM in the gym.
(We would also ask that you
not request to be in your child's cabin.)
The main lodge has Wi-Fi
access and a booster for Verizon & T-Mobile, in case you have to do some work up there.
If parents can only stay for
one or two nights, we can put together teams that can cover Monday through Thursday nights, however, it is preferable to have parents up for the entire week.
Remember the camp focus for
the students is to get to know God, self, and others within a natural
environment, so there will be science curriculum, as well as spiritual
development. They also want the students to experience freedom and independence
from home, celebrate their diversity among the different schools, challenge
their fears, and grow closer as a class.
For those of you who haven't
been to CYO camp in Occidental, it is a beautiful mix of 215 acres of mixed
redwood forest, meadows and creeks. It has a beautiful lake for canoeing and
exploration. The close proximity to the Bay Area allows for greater travel
convenience and accessibility to the site. Personally, I spent at least 15-20
years at this place chaperoning middle school students and it is home to me.
The kids will have an amazing
experience with swimming, hiking, canoeing, and exploring the redwoods and the
ocean.
We will need to set up
chaperone team/s by the end of September, since our camp dates are October 17 –21, so start spreading the word. Please e-mail me
(kbrunstein@csdo.org) with questions or to volunteer for the week! Thanks for your
continued cooperation and support!!
Ubi Caritas,
Mrs. Brunstein
