Language Arts

Language Arts inlcudes: Reading, Spelling, and Vocabulary

Text book -Open Court Reading Level 6

Thematic Units:

  • Perseverance
  • Ancient Civilizations
  • Ecology
  • People Who Took a Stand and/or Made a Difference
  • A Question of Value

We will generally cover one reading selection per week. Some modifications will be made for short weeks and assessment weeks. We will complete all California State and Diocese of Oakland Reading/Language Arts Standards for 6th Grade.

A typical week will include:

  • Monday:
    • Begin Reading Selection
  • Tuesday:
    • Finish Reading Selection
    • Vocabulary Ditto due
    • Vocabulary Words due
      • Word
      • Definition
      • Word used properly in a sentence
  • Wednesday:
    • Discuss Selection
    • Prefix/Suffix/Root Word Chart due
    • Spelling Dittos due
  • Thursday:
    • Reading Comprehension Dittos due
    • Review for Test
  • Friday:
    • Reading, Spelling, and Vocabulary Test
    • Assign and discuss homework for the following week
      • Dittos
      • Vocabulary Words
      • Spelling Words
      • Prefix/Suffix/Root Word Chart

 

Monthly Assignments include:

  • Book Report
    • Theme/genre will be assigned at the beginning of each month
    • Report generally due the last week of the month. Includes:
      • Oral presentation
      • Written report, Poster, etc
  • Reading Log- showing daily independent reading
    • Students are required to read 15 to 30 minutes each night
    • Complete Log
    • Total Minutes and record on log
    • Get Parent Signature on log
    • Turn in log the last day of each month

Independent Reading is extremely important. Research shows a direct correlation between minutes read each day and scores on Standardized Tests.
