Language Arts

Language Arts inlcudes: Reading, Spelling, and Vocabulary

Text book - Open Court Reading Level 6

Thematic Units:

  • Perseverance
  • Ancient Civilizations
  • Ecology
  • People Who Took a Stand and/or Made a Difference
  • A Question of Value

We will generally cover one reading selection per week. Some modifications will be made for short weeks and assessment weeks. We will complete all California State Reading/Language Arts Standards for 6th Grade.

A typical week will inlcude:

  • Monday:
    • Spelling Pretest
    • Assign and discuss homework for week
      • Dittos
      • Vocabulary Words
      • Spelling Words/Cursive practice
      • Prefix/Suffix Chart
      • Tests
  • Tuesday:
    • Begin Reading Selection
    • Vocabulary Words due
      • Word
      • Definition
      • Word used properly in a sentence
  • Wednesday:
    • Read and Discuss Selection
    • Spelling Words/Cursive practice due
      • Write each word 3 times neatly in cursive
    • Prefix/Suffix Chart due
  • Thursday:
    • Dittos due
      • Reading Comprehension
      • Spelling
      • Vocabulary
    • Review for Test
  • Friday:
    • Reading, Spelling, and Vocabulary Test

Monthly Assignments include:

  • Book Report
    • Theme/genre will be assigned at the beginning of each month
    • Report generally due the last week of the month. Includes:
      • Oral presentation
      • Written report, Poster, etc
  • Reading Log - showing daily independent reading
    • Students are required to read 15 to 30 minutes each night
    • Complete Log
    • Total Minutes and record on log
    • Get Parent Signature on log
    • Turn in log the last day of each month

Independent Reading is extremely important. Research shows a direct correlation between minutes read each day and scores on Standardized Tests.
