Accelerated Reader/Nightly Reading

Sunrise students will be participating in the Accelerated Reader (AR) program
this school year. This is a great program that allows students to read books
that are at their independent reading level.

In 2nd grade, 100 Minutes of nightly reading is required each week. It's
important that students are reading books within their ZPD for their weekly
reading log.

Your child will take a test to identify their reading level (we call it their
ZPD). A letter will go home providing parents with the student’s ZPD.

Students are required to read books that are within their ZPD for their
weekly reading log, as well as daily in class AR reading time. Students read
books within their ZPD and then they take a comprehension test (on the
computer at school). The goal is for students to score 80% or higher on each
quiz. Each book is assigned a point value and based on the percentage of
questions answered correctly, the students earn points.

Each student will receive a new point goal each trimester based on the
student’s individual reading level (ZPD). Parents will receive a note with
their child’s new goal at the start of each new grading period.

Please use the following information to help your child become more
successful in reading.

1. Go to www.arbookfind.com to find books that are within your child’s
reading range. Use this when purchasing new books or checking out books from
the public library.

2. Use www.arbookfind.com to check your current library of books at home. You
may be surprised to find what books are too easy for your child to read and
which may be too difficult.

3. Order books from Scholastic. The book orders that we send home, once a
month, have conveniently identified AR books and leveled them for you.

Please take advantage of this program at home. You will find that reading
books that are level appropriate for students will increase their
comprehension and enjoyment.

Please click on the “Links” tab on the classroom home page to find a link to
collections and series of books that may be interesting to students.

School Goals:
2nd Grade is a practice year. AR is not reflected on the report card as a
grade but is required for in class and nighly reading for homework.

Grades 3-6: AR accounts for 10% of the students reading grade. Students must
meet their trimester point goal as well as maintain an average of 80% or
higher on all reading practice quizzes.
